  • Well-maintained and peaceful family site in Exelby, North Yorkshire
  • Half an hour’s drive to the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors
  • Grass pitches with a recreation field, play area and games available
When you’re chasing down a family camping adventure with all sorts for the kids to do, Osprey Meadow Campsite in the peaceful North Yorkshire village of Exelby should fit the bill rather well. Equidistant between the Yorkshire Dales National Park and the North York Moors National Park (it’s half an hour’s drive to both), it’s also easy to get to the museums of York (50 minutes’ drive), and lots of family attractions like Lightwater Valley Family Adventure Park are within 20 minutes’ drive. Handy facilities for the few pitches set in a grass meadow include shower blocks, secure lockers with power for charging mobile devices and charging points for electric cars. This is a site that caters for kids very well, with swings and climbing frames in a play area, as well as a three-acre fenced field where they can safely have a run around, play games (archery and quoits are available) and kick a ball about. Mini-explorers can follow the interactive fairy trail, and games and books are on hand in the lending library for those days when the weather’s not on top form. You’re welcome to bring any four-legged friends too, as Osprey Meadow also has a dedicated dog-walking area and two lovable resident canines to help your pets feel at home.

Local attractions

The farm tours at The Big Sheep and Little Cow (five minutes’ drive) may appeal to younger kids, or they can watch raptor shows and play with meerkats at Thorp Perrow – Arboretum and Bird of Prey & Mammal Centre (10 minutes). For a day of fun scrambling around labyrinthine tunnels and dodging water obstacles, book tickets in advance for The Forbidden Corner (half an hour). Meanwhile teens and older kids are likely to love the adrenaline rides at Lightwater Valley Family Adventure Park (20 minutes). To get out and about in clear North Yorkshire air, head up to How Stean Gorge (40 minutes) for rock climbing and canyoning adventures. Admire dramatic Aysgarth Falls (40 minutes) on the River Ure, or take a selfie atop the bizarre rock formations at Brimham Rocks (35 minutes). For a taster of North Yorkshire history, have a potter around the ruins of Middleham Castle (half an hour), the childhood home of King Richard III, or stroll through landscaped ground to see the damage inflicted by Henry VIII at Fountains Abbey (25 minutes). York Minster (50 minutes) is one of the architectural wonders of the region, and you can combine a visit with taking the kids to the Jorvik Viking Centre to see how the Vikings lived in the Middle Ages.

Powered grass travel trailer campsite

Liked Fantastic site, very rustic which we loved! Everything was very well thought out they had a great selection of things to keep the kids busy and a lovely park on site. The owners were friendly, we will definitely be returning again soon we enjoyed our stay. Great base for exploring the area too!

Disliked The chemical waste disposal wasn't very good and we ended up with lots of spillage which isn't ideal. It wouldn't put us off coming again as apart from that we loved the site but something easier and cleaner to use would be beneficial for the site guests

Powered grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Nice small site but with great facilities including good washroom and showers, communal dining room and recreation field. Kids loved the football pitch, the ducks and the chickens!

Disliked My pitch was at the end of the field close to the road, and there was some traffic noise, but that cant really be avoided and it didn't really cost me any sleep.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Nice small field, only 15 pitches (I think) which was nice.
Plenty room for cars to be parked at side of tent. Clean facilities, plenty sockets to charge phones ect.

Kids loved the play area and football goals

Disliked Wouldnt put me off coming back but we have a reactive dog, friendly but likes to bark with excitement. Owners dogs coming round the field at 9pm which resulted in my dog barking, waking the children and potentially annoying other campers. Thankfully no complaints because we kept him on lead and under control.
Also owners dogs pooping on field and not getting picked up

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Facilities very clean and stock replenished. Plenty of space within pitch. Lots to do. The lady owner let my daughter help feed the runner ducks; she's still talking about it excitedly.
