  • Grass pitches at a secure, quiet site 10 minutes' drive from Howden
  • York and Hull within a 40-minute drive; 45 minutes to the coast
  • Rural views on site and easy access from M62
Green views all around and yet splendidly easy to get to from the motorway – that’s the deal at Peachey Place Campsite, in a peach of an East Yorkshire spot that’s handy for the M62 and about 10 minutes’ drive from the market town of Howden. And that’s not all that’s handy around here – this is a fine location for days of walking, cycling, fishing and horse riding, city days in York or Hull and outings to the likes of the Yorkshire Wildlife Park and Yorkshire Air Museum. For a bit of sea air, you can also set forth to Hornsea (45 minutes’ drive) or up to Bridlington beach (an hour). Mix up all the outings as you please – back at base you’ll be staying at a quiet site with secure fences and rural views at every turn. This is a friendly site that welcomes families and dogs. The grass pitches are pleasingly flat and provided with all the essential facilities including a washing-up area (with hot water), showers and toilets (with accessible and parent-friendly facilities). Barbecues and campfires are permitted but please do check with the folk on site before lighting up. Former guests liked that there is good telephone signal on site, as well as a good selection of takeaways in the village (including Indian, Chinese and fast food takeaways, and some providing delivery), along with a fish and chips shop and two pubs. All of these spots are within 20 minutes' walk of the site.

Powered grass campsite

Liked: Our first stay here and only 2nd time camping. Stayed in an electric tent pitch, we received a helpful message with information and directions prior to checking in. Graham gave us instructions and greeted us upon arrival. Toilet and shower facilities were clean. Shops, bars and some take aways are a 10 minute walk from site. We can recommend the Chinese. We enjoyed our two nights and we would stay again. We did some walks off all trails in the area too, so good location

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Peaceful, easy going approach, quiet apart from the wind roaring through the trees, clean toilets, water & water facilities well signed. The owners are clearing improving the site all the time, lots of new planting going in. Completely level. A good location for visiting RSPB Blacktoft.

Disliked: A bit chaotic in terms of getting a call back, but we did only book the morning we were going. No one there to meet us so unclear where to go but we did get a friendly reply a bit later.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Well laid out and well organised site with enormous pitches (could easily have fitted another tent or two on mine). Flat and level throughout. Though it was almost completely full on Saturday, didn't feel crowded or loud. Ample facilities - never had to wait for toilet or shower. Plenty of waste and recycling options: well organised and labelled.

Disliked: Not their fault obviously, but proximity of motorway makes for constant low-level background noise, most noticeable at night. A lot of people would barely notice it, but unfortunately I'm sensitive to noise.

Powered cement/asphalt and grass campsite

Liked: Nothing to like

Disliked: The field behind industrial buildings and derelict glass houses was partly being used to graze two horses. Apparently a parked car next to a shed was the reception area but no one was around. We turned around and left.
Pitch up need to up their game and inspect this site.

Powered cement/asphalt and grass campsite

Liked: Attentiveness of hosts.
Clean enough toilet block.
Plenty of showers and they weren't ones that needed coins.
Offered trays of wood for fires at a cost.
Big open space for children to play.
We were given lots of information about the amenities nearby.
Check out time was 3pm so we didn't feel rushed to get packed up.

Disliked: No dislikes, just a few pointers:
Only 1 sink for washing up so made it a bit of a pain if there was already someone there with quite a lot of washing.
The tap for the sink didn't have hot water.

Local attractions

When you’ve only got time or energy for a short drive, that’s not an issue here, as that’ll get you to the 14th-century ruins of a chapter house and Howden Minster (10 minutes’ drive), the adventure playground at William’s Den (10 minutes) or ready and set for some birdwatching at the North Cave Wetlands nature reserve (10 minutes). Further out, there’s quite a mixed bag too, whether it’s skipping between The Deep aquarium, the transport museum and the Old Town in Hull (35 minutes), catching the park and ride into York (40 minutes) for its minster and railway museum, peeking at the animals in the Yorkshire Wildlife Park (45 minutes) or picking up some air history in the Yorkshire Air Museum (40 minutes). When you’re craving a little of the beach, that's okay too… there’s jetskiing, canoeing, sailing and windsurfing at Hornsea beach (45 minutes) and at Bridlington beach (an hour) you can head out for long walks on the shore, settle in for fishing days or just meander around the Old Town and its eateries.
