One-acre grass site with riverside pitches

  • Secluded Herefordshire farm site on the Arrow river near Pembridge
  • A 25-minute drive to Ludlow, and half an hour to Offa’s Dyke
  • Wild camping with shops, pubs and takeaways within five minutes’ drive
A fabulously peaceful place to relax, kick back and watch the world go by, The Leen Caravan and Camping Site is tucked away in leafy north Herefordshire countryside near Leominster. Spacious grass pitches have waterside views, plus an acre for kids to play safely in, and your doggy chums are welcome too (under control) but please always clean up after them. The Leen is a working dairy farm and you’ll get the chance to see the milking herd of Hereford cattle wandering past most days. Just so you know, you may encounter farm traffic at busy times but this should not disrupt your stay – and of course, you’re welcome to wander the different habitats. If you are lucky enough, you may get to spot the resident kingfisher or a passing otter on the Arrow river. The site is only a five-minute drive from the centre of the medieval half-timbered village of Pembridge, where there are a couple of foodie pubs, stores and a café with a takeaway service. Bigger shops should be left for Leominster (15 minutes’ drive), which has supermarkets, a raft of dining options and a leisure centre with a pool for any rainy days. Simple amenities back at site include grass pitches with electric hook-ups, water taps dotted around the site, and a toilet with hand-washing facilities and a washing-up area (cold water only) a 100-metre walk from the camping field.

Liked: Proximity to town, pretty area, toilet area nice and clean

Disliked: We have stayed here many times as a couple with our dogs, last time was just under two years ago . Always enjoyed the site. This time, with our young child (16 months) it just did not have the same feel about it anymore. The first day, 3 hours after arriving, walking along the public footpath our dogs on leads were set upon by the owners black dog with no collar or lead on roaming the footpath. My husband had to shout at it quite aggressively before it backed off all whilst carrying our little boy on his backpack. I was very shaky after this. Fair enough, after calling, the husband came over to find us and apologise and said he would keep the dog locked up this weekend and advised us to “whack it” if we see it again, we were not comfortable to hit any dog, let alone someone else’s. 2 days passed, all ok, but we kept our dogs in their cage nonetheless as we had been quite worried by it all. We heard our dogs barking in the boot of the car in their cage, only to find the same black dog standing on the tail gate having a go at them!! Husband shouted again and it ran off luckily for the other guests with dogs so it didn’t approach them, it left the field via the bin area, at the edge of the touring field, where it squatted and did a poo. No owners in sight anywhere . Complained again to which we were told the husband was walking it ? No one was there, the dog ran off into the opposite field until it was a pinprick in the distance, definitely no one walking it. On top of that, if they were, why didn’t they pick up the dog poo off the touring field where young children are walking and could fall over into it? On the last night of our stay, we had our dogs caged in their awning again, thankfully!!! As suddenly a big black Staffordshire bull terrier appeared by my camping chair directly outside our awning where my little boy was playing!!! About 2 feet away from him. No lead, no collar - was with a family on another pitch. They came walking by just after to take their takeaway pizza to the benches and here they proceeded to keep the dog off the lead. There are absolutely no rules on this site anymore, there was dog poo on the paths all around the touring field. Children running wild in the stream which is really quite deep with a fast current, no parents watching them. No one from the house opposite checks the site or enforces the site rules. It’s a free for all and an accident waiting to happen. So disappointed to say we will not be staying here again as it used to be a lovely site. Not safe for young children with the dog mess and also so many dogs, ‘dangerously out of control’ - on public footpaths as well as for paying guests. Our first trip away in our caravan with our little boy was a disaster, we could not relax and our dogs spent the entire stay caged for their own safety. We did not appreciate the lies about the dog being walked - this makes it even worse after being promised by said husband that the dog would be locked up in a kennel from now on because they’ve been told numerous times that “ it is not a nice dog”

From the manager: Sorry you were disappointed with your stay on a busy Easter weekend with families staying with children and dogs all enjoying our site. We apologised for our dogs appearance on the site and he remained in his kennel apart for been walked for the remainder of the weekend. If you have issues with other guests children or dogs I suggest you address this with them??? I was on site twice and emptying bins/cleaning the toilet and saw no issues apart from guests having fun!

This is a working farm, the tracks are for cows not dog walkers hence the cow muck you are confusing with dog poo!

Simple solution is we stop everyone from bringing dogs. Which penalises everyone inc yourselves???

Only stayed one night.

Lovely area would have liked to explore more.

Disliked: Lack of facilities but we knew this and we were only staying one night. I think however that this would limit the length of our stays in future even though we have a motorhome.

Local attractions

Acquaint yourself with the gorgeous half-timbered architecture of local villages like Pembridge (five minutes’ drive) on the Black and White Trail, a 40-mile route that wends its way through north Herefordshire, taking in Lyonshall (10 minutes) and Eardisley (20 minutes). You’ll also find lots of fine timbered buildings in Ludlow (25 minutes) as well as a medieval castle and lots of pubs to have a taste of local ciders. If you’d rather be exploring on foot, Offa’s Dyke Path (half an hour) meanders roughly along the border with Wales. If you venture further into Wales, you can follow paved walking and cycling routes leading around reservoirs in the Elan Valley (50 minutes). Animal-mad kids can greet donkeys and goats at the Small Breeds Farm Park and Owl Centre (15 minutes), or you can (hopefully) wear them out canoeing on the Wye river (55 minutes). If that doesn’t quite do the trick, send them off to search out the madcap follies in Westonbury Mill Water Gardens (10 minutes).
