  • Glamping tents in a 120-year-old orchard in Guerneville
  • A 10-minute drive from Monte Rio on the Bohemian Highway
  • Spa and farm-to-table restaurant; activities like yoga and meditation
You may very well leave Dawn Ranch bright-eyed and bushy-tailed after spending your days on wellness activities ranging from morning meditations to sound baths, yoga, birdwatching and forest bathing. In fact, everything here is geared towards boosting guests' wellbeing – the glamping tents are cosy and comfortable, with a kingsize bed in each one, and they're rather splendidly set in a 120-year-old orchard in California's stunning Sonoma County. With so many activities available on site or nearby, every day can be filled with something new, whether it’s live music, s’mores or excursions like wine-tasting and whale-watching. The ranch also has a couple of permanent fixtures, including a spa for days dedicated to R&R and a restaurant serving delicious farm-to-table cuisine. That location is worth fawning over too: Dawn Ranch is in Guerneville, a town built in the 1800s along the Russian River. The ranch is a 10-minute walk from Johnson's Beach, where you can rent kayaks to get out on the Russian River (otherwise, wade out for a dip). There are seasonal events like concerts and festivals in the town, and it's home to the 19th-century Korbel Winery. Food venues and a supermarket are handily within five minutes’ walk of Dawn Ranch too. A few snacks are surely a good idea for the trails in Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve (five minutes’ drive away), where the redwoods go on for miles and miles, or the 10-mile Bohemian Highway, which starts within 10 minutes’ drive of the ranch.

Local attractions

Bundle everyone into the car for the Bohemian Highway, stretching for 10 miles between Monte Rio and Freestone. Marked by a neon sign, Monte Rio (10 minutes’ drive) has been popular with tourists since the 1870s; it has beaches and a nine-hole golf course built in the 1960s. On the way to Occidental (20 minutes), count the redwoods and fields flying past. This spot has a large zipwiring park for those who are feeling particularly adventurous. Otherwise, continue to your end destination in Freestone (25 minutes), where there is a spa and Old West-style buildings. The coast is also well within reach of Dawn Ranch. Sonoma Coast State Park (20 minutes) has 17 miles of beaches, great for hiking and picnics. Further south, Bodega Bay (35 minutes) has a laidback vibe, whale-watching tours, tasty seafood and surf classes to get stuck into.
