  • Family-friendly Axarquía site 10 minutes' drive from La Viñuela
  • A 30-minute drive from Torre del Mar beach and 45 mins from Málaga
  • Outdoor pool, kids' pool, and restaurant with lake views
Oh, those views… you could probably cope with gazing at them for a few hours/days/the rest of eternity, yes? Pick a pitch at Camping La Viñuela, in Andalusia’s Axarquía area, to sit and admire the outlook from the comfort of the restaurant terrace while friendly folk bring you a succession of drinks, snacks and grilled main meals. If you like to put names to things, those views are of the Embalse de la Viñuela lake and La Maroma, the region’s tallest mountain. If that peak has enticed you over for a closer peek, the mountains and caves of the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama Natural Park are around 35 minutes away by car. It’s a most peaceful rural spot, but it’s not that far from civilisation – supermarkets and other food shops are 10 minutes’ drive away in La Viñuela and the large El Ingenio mall is 15 minutes away for clothes shops, cinemas and a wide range of restaurants. Beachy days can be had 25 minutes away in Torre del Mar and historic wanders in gorgeous Granada, an hour and a half away. Roam all you wish, or not at all – a day spent on site can be easily spent splashing in the open-air pool and/or kids’ pool, having a kickabout at the small football field and sampling sweet treats from the ice cream shop that opens up in summer. Snack bits for a picnic lunch (think fresh bread and cured meats…) can be picked up at the site shop.

Liked: Lovely views etc and nice layout as it’s terraced. Pool looks great and was being improved when we were there - we knew in advance it was closed so we didn’t mind.
The restaurant served great food and the staff are very nice.

Disliked: Office closed when we arrived. Office hours on the door, but not on the site used for booking. Had to wait 2 hours.
Electric hook up has only one large waterproof connector, but the unit supplies two pitches , it was being used by the other pitch so we had to buy an adapter to hook up properly. Each pitch should have its own waterproof adapter as it’s much safer.
Gents showers really need a re grout in the enclosures and it’s very dirty around all the shower doors. It’s quite old by the look of it with a smell to match the age.
Broken steps outside shower block are dangerous.
The site is a “pitch up and pay up” site. Hasnt really got a personal touch that other sites have.

Liked: Freundliches Personal.

Disliked: Sehr steile Zufahrt !!

Power optional earth site

Liked: We had 2 dogs and a cat and a caravan and large awning. The campsite let us choose a large quiet pitch close to the very nice showers and clean toilets. We had a great 2 week stay and the site was ideally situated for markets and coastal visits. The scenery is spectacular and it's great for dogs and walkers with a gate at the bottom of the site for access to the lake

Disliked: The only problem was our departure as the exit was very steep and the top of the drive was loose gravel. The people who left half an hour before us had exactly the same problem.

Power optional earth tent, campervan or trailer tent site (small)

Liked: It is a beautiful spot with views right over La Vinuela lake and to the mountains beyond.

There is an onsite restaurant which served great tapas and many other dishes - reasonable prices for both food & drinks. There is another restaurant right next door which we didn't eat in but always seemed busy with Spanish families, which is always a great accolade.

The showers/toilets/washing up areas, etc. were always squeaky clean and cleaned more regularly than any other site we’ve stayed on. We couldn’t fault the facilities either - recycling, grey water, clean water (at your pitch), toilet emptying, washers & dryers, etc.

There is access to the lakeside from the campsite - perfect for walking yourself or the dog, cycling, etc. Electric bikes are recommended if you’re venturing out on the main roads, unless you’re fit (we’re not!).

Reception were very helpful and nothing was too much trouble. They also have a small selection of provisions if you run out of anything, but there are several supermarkets a short drive away.

Disliked: The Wifi was touch and go but it wasn’t a problem for us with a mobile router.

Power optional earth site

Liked: Excellent reception staff.
Good clean facilities plus laundry room.
2 good restaurants on site.
Very friendly, informative and helpful English couple who live on site.

Disliked: Very remote. Stock up before you arrive. You need a car to get about. Nearest village 1.5km away and NOT an easy walk or cycle. Once on site not much to do.
The lake in winter is an extremely difficult walk with no clear path and mud that is more like clay. WiFi a bit hit n miss.
Would not return.

Liked: This is one of the highlights of our trip. The friendly greeting for the staff who despite being low season were there to make surenournstay was warm and welcoming. The views of the lake and mountains are amazing. We were able to park with a line of site which could win any pictorial competition. STUNNING place to visit. The restaurants serve up excellent dishes to suit all diets and choices.

Local attractions

Want to keep things country for a while? Slope off to the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama Natural Park (35 minutes’ drive) for hikes and climbing, or the Nerja Caves (also 35 minutes) to see the stalactites and stalagmites that lurk below the surface (and work out which ones are which…) Wing it home via the Honey Museum of Malaga (20 minutes) to learn about the local sweet stuff. Up for some sea air? Take the 25-minute drive to Torre del Mar for beaches, a waterpark or a round of golf with a sea view, or make it to Málaga (45 minutes) to hike around the hilltop Arab Alcazaba and take in the Picasso museum or fashion museum before hitting the sands. There’s another Alcazaba fort in Vélez-Málaga (20 minutes), along with a contemporary art museum, and the famed Moorish Alhambra is an hour and a half away in Granada – do your best to get up early if you’re headed here, so you’ll have time to stroll around the Albaicín Arab quarter, taking in tea and tagines along the way.
