The site

  • Off-grid site on a rural farm a five-minute drive from Cafede
  • Santa Águeda reservoir 10 minutes’ drive; Castelo Branco 15 minutes
  • Dogs welcome; basic outdoor kitchen; communal fridge freezer
Keep your eyes peeled for the large agave plant about one and a half kilometres south of Cafede on the M551: it’s your indication to turn into the dirt road that leads all the way to Quinta de Volte a Fonte. This peaceful site on a farm in central Portugal was established in 2023 by Annemieke, a resourceful Dutch native who yearned for a self-sustaining, off-grid life. The site comes with a composting toilet, a shower and a basic outdoor kitchen with cooking and washing-up facilities, plus a launderette and a communal fridge freezer. Scattered around are a few cosy seating areas with views of the surrounding landscape. In short, all you need (and rather a lot more, actually) for a relaxing wild-camping break. Other facilities are still in their infancy – or rather in Annemieke’s head, which is bubbling with ideas: there are plans for a bigger, better outdoor kitchen and an indoor kitchen, for example; and she also intends to plant fruit trees, make a vegetable garden, build a pond and create shaded areas with pergolas. In the meantime, though, you can stroll with your four-legged companion (a welcome guest here) through a splendid olive grove dotted with majestic cork trees, listening out for crickets and frogs (and birdsong, of course), smelling the fragrant lavender and trying to identify the various plants on site. The nearest grocery store is in the village of Alcains (10 minutes’ drive), which also has several restaurants and cafés; for more options, you can head to Castelo Branco (15 minutes).

Unpowered grass site

Liked: We loved the wildness and beauty of the place. Annamieke and her dogs were wonderfully friendly and we had a glorious peaceful night under the full moon. The campsite is simple - a natural place with a well-equipped outdoor kitchen and a little shower and toilet block. The area is incredible - Annamieke directed us to a spring in the village to fill our water bottles, then to a nearby lake where we swam.

Local attractions

Barragem de Santa Águeda (10 minutes’ drive) is a large reservoir (also known as Lake Marateca) surrounded by wooded trails. It’s possible to go for a cooling swim here, launch a canoe or angle for carp. If you’d rather stay dry, there is plenty of birdwatching to be done, with resident herons and waders. The Museu da Seda in Castelo Branco (15 minutes) illustrates the history of Portuguese silk, with displays on the Silk Road, sericulture and the latest applications of this product. Stroll through the manicured gardens at Jardim do Paço Episcopal before taking in the views of the town’s rooftops from the medieval castle. Foxes, otters and wolves inhabit Serra da Estrela Nature Park (one hour), a protected area of rocky peaks, glacial valleys and natural lagoons. As you walk among forests of oak and chestnut trees, though, it’s more likely that you’ll catch glimpses of golden eagles and peregrine falcons soaring high in the sky.
