- Laidback camping right on Panay Beach at Garawon in Eastern Samar
- Direct access to the Mushroom Islands; Limbujan 20 minutes’ drive
- Barbecue, shared kitchen and dining area; shops five minutes’ walk
Well, you said you wanted to get away from it all, and you can certainly do that at Camping Panay Beach, set on a gorgeous golden-sand beach just outside the colourful fishing village of Garawon in Eastern Samar.
With facilities that include a shower, toilets, drinking water and electricity, this laidback, tree-sheltered site is backed by lush tropical jungle and sits right on the edge of Matarinao Bay, overlooking traditional wooden fishing boats and outriggers moored up in the shallows. You can laze under the coconut palms, do a spot of remote working thanks to the decent wifi signal, or have a snorkel to see vibrant tropical fish swimming through gentle waves.
Food-wise, grill up meals on the barbecue (pick up supplies at the local roadside grocery stores, five minutes’ walk), or put snacks together in the communal kitchen. Whatever you decide, you can eat at the communal covered dining area – a handy spot for mixing with fellow guests and making new friends.
If kids are travelling with you, they’ll also have the chance to make pals with local children, and they can play safely together on the beach while you can keep an eye on them.

Local attractions
There’s plenty of spectacular natural beauty to discover; go hiking among verdant rainforest at Limbujan (20 minutes’ drive) or wander among the undulating hills at Canquiante Grassland (15 minutes). Walk up to the Mining and Abaca waterfalls (both about 40 minutes’ drive and then 20 minutes’ walk) for refreshing dips in the pools at their feet.
You can wade out to the vegetation-topped Mushroom Islands from your pitch in Panay Beach, or take a small boat out to Minalongon, a tiny islet in the middle of Matarinao Bay where you can lay in the sand, snorkel and snooze gently under the canopy of palm trees.
Other options for days of leisurely beach hopping include the narrow crescent at Basyao (10 minutes) and the white sands at Panglaw (15 minutes), edged by great granite boulders.
