Get ready to get active: big and family-friendly Recreatiecentrum De Vogel on the shores of Vogel lake near Hengtsdijk has a huge range of activities in and out of the water from its Zeeland setting. Around the region, the Dutch city of Bergen op Zoom is 25 kilometres away and the Belgian city of Antwerp is also within easy reach. The lake by the site has an artificial beach and a selection of play equipment in and around the water; you can also fish from here or rent canoes, pedaloes and rowing boats. More watery antics are at the site indoor pool with waterslide, the kids' pool, and the hot tub. Recreatiecentrum De Vogel is excellently set up for kids of all ages, with a petting zoo where they can help feed the animals, trampolines, a water playground and an indoor playground, a kids' cinema and a dedicated club building for older kids, with dartboard, football table, TV and free wifi. Also among the leisure facilities are miniature golf, tennis courts and a multisports pitch, along with a roomy restaurant and snack bar, and a well-stocked shop selling food and clothes.

Local attractions

Hire a bike and pick up a route map to tackle the cycling routes around the site, or to the banks of the estuary a few kilometres away. Fishing, canoeing and pedalo and boat hire are all available on site. Around the region, the intriguingly-named Drowned Land of Saeftinghe nature reserve 15 kilometres away covers a swamp area east of Zeeuws-Vlaanderen bordering the Scheldt river. Guided walking tours can be booked from the Saeftinghe Visitor Centre. The small and arty city of Bergen op Zoom 25 kilometres away is worth a look for its historic attractions, including its oldest monument Gevangenpoort, and the 15th- and 16th-century Markiezenhof Palace, with cultural centre, museum, paintings and exhibitions. The zoo, aquarium, museums and restaurants of Antwerp are 40 kilometres away; further afield, the Mini Mundi amusement park and the Het Arsenaal pirate museum are both within 50 kilometres.

Liked: Cleanliness around the site, staff took pride and kept the place clean even in the off season.

Shower block was adequate, 6min showers (could always double and have 12) probably showed me I don't need any longer at home.

Didn't use the facilities much as we used the camp site as a base to explore but it is in a good location for this and good value for money.

Disliked: Restaurant was a bit on the pricey side so go well stocked

Liked: Activities including lake. Lots of play parks, plenty of well maintained washrooms and toilets, good cafe. Staff were friendly and helpful.

Liked: Many outdoor ans indoor activitis for kids. Not very noisy at night, clean WC.

Disliked: No sport activities for adultes (but I think that unfortunately IT doesnt interest other adultes who prefer drinking béer in peace while thé kids are busy at thé swimingpool...). No healthy (normal?! Veggies?!) food in thé restaurant.
