Sitting on the outskirts of Zoutkamp and close to the mouth of the Lauwersmeer in Groningen, Camping de Rousant is a pleasantly leafy spot with lots of facilities for all the family (and any family dogs) to enjoy. For starters, there’s a play area for toddlers, watersports and fishing on the Reitdiep – a tributary of the Lauwersmeer – a private marina where you can dock your canoe or kayak, and a small river beach for snoozing in the sun. You can also hire bikes on site to follow gentle waterside routes along the river – great for youngsters gaining confidence – and a games room for downtime with all the kids. And when it comes to foodie matters, while there’s not a restaurant on site, there are several eateries within 10 minutes’ walk or so, and you are allowed barbecues, giving you a chance to have a go at alfresco cooking. Some rather unusual toilets are found in the two massive buoys that stand on site, and you have access to laundry facilities for a fee; please remember to bring your own detergents. Should you wish for a few quiet moments of contemplation, the Winter Garden is a peaceful space with greenhouses that stay wonderfully cool in summer under the vines. In autumn, you can taste their harvest after the grapes have been picked and processed into sparkling fresh wine.

A peaceful spot with roomy sites, helpful staff, and lovely bushland near bike trails. Guests loved the tidy grass, chilled vibe, and greenhouse for a chinwag. Some felt the loos were a bit old and not enough, plus reception shut early, pitch assignments were confusing, and there wasn't much comms for urgent stuff.

Liked Wir waren mit der ganzen Familie übers Wochenende im Urlaub und haben dort übernachtet. Es hat uns sehr gut gefallen. Alles war gut und effizient organisiert. Obwohl wir uns für das Zelten entschieden haben, waren alle Hygienebedingungen gegeben.Ich kann es nur wärmstens empfehlen. Wir werden diesen Ort auf jeden Fall wieder besuchen.

Liked We loved this site. Everything was so easy. The large greenhouse that you could cook and eat in as well as make a fire in was fantastic. The staff were lovely and the site had easy access to bike paths and waterways.

Disliked Gras was aan de hoge kant, voorstel plek maaien als iemand de plaatst verlaat. De gecombineerde wasbak voor tandenpoetsen en handen wassen vanaf het toilet.

Liked Heel vriendelijk personeel, Ruime staanplaatsen op dikke groene netjes afgereden gazon, heel rustige omgeving, gelegen aan fietsknoopnetwerk, vlotte boeking.

Disliked Verouderd maar proper sanitair op de weide, douchegordijn is proper maar plakt door het warme water en is daardoor niet hygiënisch, dus beter wegdoen, individuele lavabo’s ontbreken. Restaurant is al langer gesloten, doch staat nog steeds vermeld op de website.

Local attractions

Take walking boots for days exploring on foot in the wetlands of Lauwersmeer National Park (10 minutes’ drive), which you can explore by boat or bike – you might spot wild Konik ponies on your jaunts. If the kids have taken to cycling, take the 4.5-hour Pronkjewailen bike ride along well-maintained paths past historic Groningen villages. For more wildlife spotting, head for the Vogelkijkhut De Baak hide (10 minutes) to catch sight of barnacle geese and raptors. The Uitkijktoren Reiddomp observation tower (also 10 minutes) has lovely views across the marshes and waterways of the national park, and it’s just the place to catch stunning sunsets on cloudless days. Another action-filled family day out can be had in the Schiermonnikoog National Park. Take the ferry from Lauwersoog (15 minutes) for swimming in the sea, strolling the beach or cycling around the dunes and salt marshes. The highlight for the kids may well be the regular tractor rides along the beach – and be sure to keep an eye out for seals on the journey.
