EuroParcs De Wiedense Meren

- Peaceful family-friendly site in National Park Weerribben-Wieden
- A 10-minute drive from Giethoorn and 15 minutes from Meppel
- Waterways for swimming or boat rides and a marina on site
Surrounded by the waterways of National Park Weerribben-Wieden, EuroParcs de Wiedense Meren should soon have you thinking ‘what a spot’. The island has the Beulakerwijde on one side and the Belterwijde on the other, and it is a less-touristy alternative to Giethoorn, 10 minutes’ drive away.
When you’ve woken from your slumber, you might feel like a quick dip in the waterways or take a boat trip further afield. Or you may be planning to blend in with the crowds in Giethoorn, a car-free village with farms, thatched cottages and (naturally) many footpaths and cycling paths.
National Park Weerribben-Wieden is the largest peat bog in northwest Europe, so on just a basic walk, you might get to see a large fire butterfly or an otter, the green bulbous orchid and swamp surge. That’s not counting the heaps of reed beds, lakes and swamp forests.
Of course, this stunning scenery goes hand-in-hand with scenic walks, bike rides and boat or canoe rides. There’s a marina on the site, so there’s no need to go tracking down a far-away departure point.
Holidays are of the quiet, relaxing type at this Overijssel site. Fishing is available, along with bicycle hire, and there’s a shop five minutes’ drive away for any snacks when you get peckish. Giethoorn has plenty of restaurants should you feel like eating out (by the canalside, perhaps?).

Local attractions
Giethoorn aside, the site is just a short drive from plenty more cosy towns. Pretty canals are a centrepiece in Meppel (15 minutes’ drive) too, along with bridges, monuments like the Meppeler Toren, a printing museum and Molen de Weert, where corn is still ground to this day.
Hanseatic towns might be a hit too. Hasselt (20 minutes) has plenty of historical buildings, including the Grote of St. Stephanuskerk. Dubbed ‘little Amsterdam’, its canals form part of the Zwarte Water, so it’s a splendid setting for peaceful strolls, which might continue into the six-acre-large 17th-century Japanese garden. The town is also an important pilgrim route on the way to Santiago de Compostela in Spain.
Those keen on history can make their way south to Zwolle (35 minutes), where there’s a medieval centre with a 600-year-old city gate, a theatre, parks and a canal (of course). Kids can let off steam at Dino Land Zwolle (half an hour), while those with an interest in the arty side of things can check out the art museum in Zwolle’s 19th-century palace, Museum de Fundatie (35 minutes).
