Local attractions

All the sights and activities of Maremma Regional Natural Park are a mere 10 minutes’ drive away; you can spend days hiking and cycling forest trails through the hilly countryside dotted with ancient watchtowers, kayak down the waterways or snorkel off the sandy beaches. There are surf schools at Porto San Stefano (20 minutes' drive), and you can also ride horses through the waves at sunset (10 minutes). Another hotspot for nature-lovers is Feniglia Dune (25 minutes), a thin spit of land connecting the quasi-island of Monte Argentario with the mainland. Here, you can sometimes see flamingos stalking in the shallow waves or deer flitting through trees backing the beach. Several millennia of Tuscan history looms large in these parts: Etruscan figurines adorn the tombs at the Necropolis of Tarquinia (45 minutes), and seaside Orbetello (10 minutes) is still wrapped in segments of its Etruscan walls. Moving forward in time, there’s a landmark walled citadel and spiky defence tower in medieval Magliano in Toscana (20 minutes).
