  • Quiet campsite with mountain views in Liguria’s Fontanabuona Valley
  • Sestri Levante beach half an hour’s drive; Portofino 50 minutes
  • Grass pitches with a shared kitchen, pizza oven and games area
Set in the sleepy village of Calvari and backed by forested mountains, Il Giardino is a peaceful rural campsite high up in Liguria’s dramatic Fontanabuona Valley. Here all is stillness and quiet – just the ticket for laidback days doing nothing in particular – and yet it’s only half an hour’s drive from the lively beach scene along the pretty Gulf of Tigullio should you require some action. Shaded by trees to keep you and yours nice and cool in the height of summer, the grass pitches also make a handy base for exploring exclusive Portofino (50 minutes’ drive) and the colourful villages of the Cinque Terre (an hour). You certainly shouldn't go hungry when staying here, as food takes centre stage. There’s a wood-fired pizza oven for guest use, a shared kitchen and barbecues, plus tables made from slate and wood for alfresco dining. And if you’re keen on your gastronomy, you can book cookery courses when you arrive on site, and thus look forward to feasting on typical Genoese dishes such as pesto farinata pancakes. And if that sounds like too much hard work, simply let life drift past as you chill by the small pool, or take on fellow guests at ping-pong or table football in the recreation area.

Local attractions

Transport yourselves back to medieval times with a wander around the labyrinthine centre of lively Genoa (55 minutes’ drive); check out the striped, part-Romanesque and part-Gothic Cattedrale di San Lorenzo and stop off for an espresso overlooking the landmark fountain in Piazza de Ferrari. Take the Via Cairoli funicular up to the Parco Urbano delle Mura for views over the city, and then head for Porto Antico to have a look around the tropical plants in Renzo Piano’s glass La Biosfera. Cruise the designer shops in exclusive Portofino and sip chilled wine in a terrace café, or head for the multicoloured fishing village of Boccadasse (both 50 minutes) and grab a beachside table to watch the sun set over the Gulf of Tigullio. There are more spectacular seaside villages to admire in the Cinque Terre (an hour), where brightly coloured cottages appear to tumble down sheer cliff faces. Fancy a family bucket-and-spade day on the beach? Make for Sestri Levante (half an hour), where you can hang out at a beach lido or throw down your towel on the free sandy stretch encircling the Baia del Silenzio.

Staunen, Schmunzeln, Bewundern.

Wer will, bekommt Strom.

Very friendly helpful owners, pitches fairly level . Enjoyable stay
