  • Calabria holiday village five minutes' walk from a free beach
  • Gioia Tauro 10 minutes’ drive; Reggio Calabria 45 minutes
  • Swimming pool, play area, evening entertainment and bar on site
Keen to dive into the crystal-clear waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea? You’ll not have far to go when you stay at Villaggio Camping Anna – this holiday village site about 300 metres away from the Calabria coastline, between Palmi and Gioia Tauro. That means it’s about a five-minute walk (even at a gentle holiday pace…) from the site to the sea, where you can paddle, swim and lay your towel on a free beach. (Being west facing, it’s a lovely spot for a sunset picnic, too…) As there are no facilities here, it’s best to bring at least your own umbrella – sunny days can get pretty hot around here. Those who prefer a beach with umbrellas, sunloungers and drinks can pick from several such spots within a few minutes’ drive (or a half-hour walk). Time away from the beach? Well, you could kick back by the site’s pool (perhaps with a coffee or cool drink from the bar), play table tennis or table football, or take the kids to the play area. There’s also a horse riding centre just next door, and site staff organise entertainment in the evenings (such as karaoke or discos). For eats, there’s a dining room on site and a good string of restaurants a few minutes’ walk away serving all sorts of things from sushi to pizzas topped with spicy ‘nduja (a local Calabria speciality). Self-catering sorts can use the barbecue stations and communal freezer on site.

Local attractions

This stretch of coastline is known as the ‘Costa Viola’, because the shimmering waters are such a deep shade of blue they almost appear purple at times. It’s a spectacular place to explore, perhaps on a coastal hike or a scenic drive to Monte Sant’Elia (20 minutes’ drive), which has sweeping views over the sea. There are lots of lovely beaches to check out around here, and some interesting sights under the surface of the sea, too – head to Palmi (15 minutes’ drive) for scuba and snorkel trips. Look out across the sea and you’ll see the shores of Sicily; if you’re not satisfied with looking from afar, drive to Villa San Giovanni (35 minutes) for the short ferry ride to Messina, up in the very northeast of the island. Back on the mainland, it’s worth visiting some of the local towns – Gioia Tauro (10 minutes) has the ‘Piano delle Fosse’ historic quarter and an archaeological museum, and pretty Scilla (half an hour) is home to Castello Ruffo and an old fishing quarter full of cobbled streets and seafront restaurants. The museums of Reggio Calabria (45 minutes) are also well worth a visit.
