If you’re picking a place for some true peace and quiet on your rural break, you may well find yourself eying up either forest or lakeside locations. In fact, you can go one better by booking in to Campingplatz Leisten – this Mecklenburg-West Pomerania site is surrounded by forest, and it’s also right on the northern bank of Lake Plauer.
That fabulous backdrop means this place is certainly a good pick for those peaceful breaks – and there’s an extra bonus in the fact that it’s at the end of a dead-end lane, so there’s no danger of any passing traffic. There’s also very little light pollution here, so you may well get some splendid stargazing on clear nights.
These surroundings aren’t just good for human visitors; they’re also popular with birds. You’ll likely wake to the sound of birdsong in the morning, and – depending on the season – may also hear the call of the cuckoo and see sea eagles fishing or wild geese grazing. Cranes carry out their courtship dances here in spring and then create a fabulous display in autumn when their migration flights take them over the site. You’ll be able to access the lake from the little beach area for swimming or paddleboarding.
To preserve this special atmosphere, facilities at this site have been kept fairly simple – however, the essentials are covered with a small playground, a small drinks kiosk, a chemical disposal point and a bathroom block with toilets and showers. Plau am See (10 minutes’ drive) is your nearest source of shops, restaurants and the like.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.- The campground/park does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.
- Group bookings of 6 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).
- No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.
- A charge of EUR1.00 ($1.64) applies for the use of the shower.
- Discount cards and gift vouchers cannot be applied to bookings made via Pitchup.com.
- A cable measuring at least 20 metres is needed for the electric hook-ups.
- Units longer than 9 metres are not allowed.
- Minimum spacing of 2 metres between pitches.
- Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the campground/park are unlit.

Local attractions
This site is just on the edge of the Schwinzer Heide nature reserve, so you’ll be able to wander out for a walk straight from your pitch. The Müritz National Park (40 minutes’ drive) has lots more lovely trails, and the many lakes of this whole area have plenty of options for waterside walks.
Heading south along the shores of Lake Plauer, you’ll get to Plau am See (10 minutes). It’s a handy place for shops and meals, and also has some attractive buildings like the Burgmuseum and St. Marien Kirche. There are also a few beach areas here and activities including waterskiing and windsurfing.
Elsewhere nearby you might like to visit the Agroneum (10 minutes), an open-air museum full of intriguing buildings and everyday objects, visit the Malchow Monkey Forest (15 minutes) to try out its two summer toboggan runs or head to Bärenwald Müritz (20 minutes), where rescued bears live their lives in conditions that replicate their native habitats.
