  • Cosy wooden lodges at a small rural site near Labastide de Virac
  • Pont d'Arc and Gorges de l'Ardèche within a 20-minute drive
  • Ensuite bathroom and kitchen for each lodge; bike hire on site
Cosy, well-equipped lodges and an excellent location within easy reach of lots of the top sights of the Ardèche – there's a lot to like about 1000 Pailles, a small rural glamping site a kilometre and a half from Labastide de Virac. This location is just outside the Natural Reserve of the Gorges de l’Ardèche, so it makes a great base for visits to the Pont d'Arc, La Grotte Chauvet 2 and the Aven d'Orgnac cave, as well as all sorts of scenic hikes, bike rides and canoe trips. Having the village so close by is a handy thing too, as it means you can get to shops and places to eat with a 15-minute walk/two-minute drive. The lovely wooden lodges here are rather enticing too – each one has its own ensuite bathroom and mini kitchen (including a fridge) as well as beds made up and towels provided to make life easy for guests. There’s plenty of space to relax out in the open air, with barbecues, picnic tables and hammocks provided for those lazy afternoons and outdoor evening meals. Homemade bread and fresh eggs are available to buy on site (subject to availability). This is a gorgeous part of the world, so it’s no surprise to hear that owners Dagmar and Christophe are keen to preserve the environment; eco-friendly features include dry toilets, an electric car charger and bike hire to help you get around in a carbon-free manner.

Local attractions

This is a particularly scenic part of the world, with lots of spectacular geological formations to check out while you’re here. You should probably start in the Gorges de le’Ardèche, hiring canoes/kayaks in Vallon-Pont-d’Arc (15 minutes' drive) to paddle down the clear water as far as the huge Pont d’Arc rock arch. There are also some great hikes and scenic drives to be done through the reserve that surrounds the gorges, and adventure centres in Vallon-Pont-d’Arc offer various activities like abseiling and canyoning. The sights aren’t all above ground though, you know – it’s also well worth going underground to see France’s largest showcave, L’Aven d’Orgnac (10 minutes), and to visit La Grotte Chauvet 2 (20 minutes), a huge reconstruction of the UNESCO-listed prehistoric cave. For other days out you may like to to have a fragrant stroll through Maison de la Lavande (half an hour), meet all sorts of beasts at Parc Animalier des Gorges de l’Ardèche (10 minutes) or tackle the zipwires and via ferrata climbing trails at Accrobranche Adventure Camp (half an hour).
