  • Peaceful family campsite on the edge of Lac du Jaunay in the Vendée
  • Atlantic beaches 15 minutes’ drive; Puy du Fou theme park an hour
  • Waterpark, bar and shop on site; fishing and watersports on the lake
Need a quiet Pays de la Loire holiday spot for you and the kids? You won’t go wrong if you book in at Camping le Lac du Jaunay, a family-friendly Vendée site 15 minutes’ drive from sandy Atlantic beaches and close to strolls through peaceful pine forest. The site has the added bonus of being next to Lac du Jaunay, a freshwater reservoir. You can go fishing on the lake (buy fishing permits from reception), and explore the shoreline by kayak, but swimming is not allowed. For that, Camping le Lac du Jaunay has its own waterpark with indoor and outdoor pools, a waterslide and a shallow pool for toddlers. Here you can keep an eye on the kids in the water, have a snooze on the sun deck and chill completely using the massage jets and whirlpool baths. There are various other distractions for kids on site, including mini golf and pétanque, a play area with a bouncy castle and organised entertainment during high season, while everybody can look after their physical health on a daily basis at the alfresco fitness club. No need to worry about feeding the family; there’s a relaxed bar/restaurant with a menu of pizzas to eat in or take away – and don’t forget to order your morning bread and pastries from the bar before 10pm. Pick up basics in the on-site grocery shop, and for larger restocking needs, head for the supermarket in Landevieille (five minutes’ drive).

Local attractions

There’s plenty of beach action to be had in the Vendée. The Côte de Lumière (15 minutes’ drive) encompasses lively seaside resorts like Saint-Jean-de-Monts (35 minutes) with its street markets, sandy beaches and wooden pier – a great sunset-viewing spot on clear days. Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie (20 minutes) has a long stretch of sand popular with surfers and backed by bars. You might care to explore the untamed Marais Poitevin Regional Natural Park (35 minutes) on cruises around the waterways in traditional wooden punts. The park is also a popular cycling destination with a maze of gentle, flat bike paths suitable for younger kids. Puy du Fou (an hour) theme park is one of the biggest pulls in the area; take the kids for a full day of historic pageants with casts of thousands of people and animals. Straddling the Loire River, storied Nantes (also about an hour) beckons people in to tour the majestic Castle of the Dukes of Brittany and ride the four-storey automaton elephant along the waterside.
