Pitches with greenery all around

  • Laidback site in the Flanders Mountains, near hiking and bike trails
  • A 45-minute drive to the coast for beaches and Plopsaland
  • Outdoor pool, fitness trail and regular food truck visits in summer
Perhaps it’s the gorgeous green surroundings that brings you to the Flanders Mountains, or maybe you’re tempted by the area’s traditional gastronomy – or a bit of both, given how well the two complement each other. Whatever the draw is, you’ll have a fabulous base here at Camping La Sablière du Mont Noir. This relaxed and spacious site is in a lovely location, five minutes’ drive from Saint-Jans-Cappel and surrounded by splendid views across the surrounding hills and valleys. There are lots of attractive trails nearby for hiking and cycling, and the north coast is about 45 minutes’ drive away for beach days and seaside walks. Ypres is about 20 minutes’ drive away for history-themed days out, and there are plenty of kid-friendly outings too – including Youpiland, 10 minutes’ walk away. There’s more activity on site, as well – this park has an outdoor pool, a playground, a fitness trail and a pétanque court, along with a sports area with football goal and basketball hoop. There’s also a large social room with free darts, table football and billiards as well as a bar that’s open at peak times. Occasional events – including fitness sessions and live music evenings – are laid on in high season. With all this to fill your days, you’ll certainly need a good feed, whether that involves trying out local restaurants, lighting up your barbecue or heading to the outdoor social space, where food trucks park up regularly to serve a range of tasty eats.

What customers say

Clean facilities, helpful staff, and great pitches get a thumbs up. Some found pitches rocky, WiFi extra, and a few mentioned dated showers. Still a good base for exploring.

Liked Access to the pool, location to lille, childrens park. Most workers were lovely and happy to be patient working through the language barrier.

Disliked More toilet/shower facilities would have improved the location.
Pool could do with a little maintenance although children oblivious and happy so not a big problem.

Liked The fact that there was a tasteful family orientated restaurant bar across the road from campsite called Mont- Noir Altitude .152
It was refeshing and very friendly. The campsite was well attended at the busy season so good to have a choice of bars available

Disliked Pitch 29.. had open sewage and it become very smelly
Did not understand why we had to pay an extra 19 euros for taxes .. seemed expensive ontop of prepayment

From the manager: Hello, we are sorry to see that you had a problem with your pitch. You should have come to see us at reception to discuss it because we would have found a solution to change your pitch. We do not understand why you say you paid a supplement of 19 euros? You can send us by email your name as well as proof of payment to cmontnoirgmail.com for verification. We do our utmost to satisfy our customers as proven by the very good reviews on pitchup. Happy to see that despite everything you enjoyed the surroundings. We look forward to welcoming you again in better conditions.

Unpowered grass site

Liked Location, swimming pool, entertainment and price. Stayed here a week with 16 and 11 year old. 11yo wants to go back next year. She loved the swimming pool and evening entertainment. Although it's only a small site, there are plenty of things to do... swimming pool and bar, small playground and outdoor gym equipment, multisports pitch, table tennis tables (and we bought a bat and balls set at the garden centre in the local town for €2.70), boules/petanque pitches, pool table. I think it also claims to have a restaurant but it doesn't really. I only saw a sign advertising a couple of panini. However, they do have visiting food vans and we had some lovely Caribbean chicken and rice one night. It's a 5 minute walk into the local town, which is half in France and half in Belgium. It's not a "normal" town though. It's a sort of weird version of Matlock Bath. It's mostly pubs and restaurants, but there is also the previously mentioned garden centre, another sort of homeware and garden place, a big shop that's like a cross between a poundshop, a local DIY shop and The Range, a couple of friteries (one of which wouldn't sell me any frites), a few strange souvenir shops (that obviously don't sell much as some things are about 30 years old and in very faded packaging, but if you need a photo frame for a baby born in 2000 you'll find it here), an amusement arcade, a tattooist and an "erotic store". There is also a cash machine. At the far end of the town there is a chair lift ride, a vineyard and a mini golf place. There are other, more normal, towns within a 10 minute drive in all directions, in France and Belgium. It's also only 20 minutes from Ypres.

Disliked Hard, rocky pitch but maybe not all the same. Would benefit from more toilets as sometimes had to queue when the large group of school children were staying there. Some people have mentioned the lack of toilet paper but, in my experience, this is normal for many French campsites so just take your own. This is not something which bothers me. I'm also not sure how good the wifi is. I tried the 10 mins free but it was very slow so I didn't pay for any. Maybe it's just my phone though.

Liked Lovely little site.
When we arrived the our LWB camper was too long to swing into our pitch however a new pitch was sorted for us straight away.
Really lovely swimming pool/ bar area. Great kids play ground.

Disliked WiFi was available but at an additional charge. In the world we live in, WiFi is almost expected these days.

Liked Clean and functional facilities. Friendly reception and fresh pastries in the morning. Nice atmosphere and had a market and lovely walking paths nearby.

Disliked Pitch was very rocky, had to pitch our tent quite far down as it was impossible tog get pegs in. Thankfully it was spacious enough to allow this but still annoying.

Local attractions

In these gorgeous green surroundings you’ll definitely want to get out to explore on foot or bikes. They’re not particularly high but the nearby Black Mountain, Red Mountain and Mont des Cats all have great trails with lovely green views. You might even spot a vineyard or two along the way… To step back in time a little, visit the Musée de la radio Boeschèpe (10 minutes’ drive) or head over the border to Ypres (20 minutes) to see the World War I battlefields, In Flanders Fields Museum and Vauban ramparts. There are more war memorials up at the coast, such as the Museum Dunkerque 1940 Operation Dynamo, and the area has some lovely beaches too, around Dunkirk and Malo-les-Bains (all about 45 minutes away). Need to entertain the kids? Take a 10-minute walk to Youpiland - Le Mont Noir for colourful outdoor fun or head to Plopsaland De Panne (45 minutes’ drive) for shows, attractions and rides for all ages.
