Les Châtaigniers du Lac

- Well-equipped chalets in a chestnut forest on Lac de Villefort
- Gorges du Chassezac 15 minutes’ drive; Le Puy one hour and 25 minutes
- Access to a beach; heated outdoor pool with paddling area; fishing
Swimming, fishing and boat trips, plus epic mountain hikes along forested trails – perhaps with a cheeky gastronomic twist. Hands up who thinks that sounds like the recipe for a great holiday. (Okay, you can lower your hand now.) All those activities, and more besides, await at Les Châtaigniers du Lac, on the north-easternmost tip of Lac de Villefort. Surrounded by a chestnut forest (hence the name), this peaceful chalet village sits in the middle of Cévennes National Park – and not too far from the Parc Naturel Régional des Monts d’Ardèche, either (about one hour’s drive).
Each lodge comes with comfortable beds and a sofa bed (bed linen included), plus a fully equipped kitchen (with oven, fridge freezer, dishwasher and washing machine), dining/living area with pellet stove (for cosy evenings) and a bathroom with a separate toilet.
The site has its own lakeside beach for swimming, and just down the road (five minutes, or a 15-minute walk) there’s a nautical base with paddleboards, kayaks and canoes for rent (pedal boats, too, if you’d rather use leg power for propulsion). Meanwhile anglers might be pleased to learn that trout (both brown and rainbow) inhabit these waters, so don’t forget to pack your fishing gear. If you don’t love frigid lake waters, there’s a heated pool on site (complete with paddling pool for the youngest members of your party).

Local attractions
Among the attractions of Lac de Villefort is the Château de Castanet (10 minutes’ drive), a 13th-century fortress on the westernmost tip of the lake. For top views of the water and some of the bridges that cross it, head to the Barrage de Villefort sur l’Altier, a 1960s dam.
Whether you’re into hiking, climbing or whitewater rafting, you should find something to do at the Gorges du Chassezac (15 minutes), carved out of the limestone cliffs by the river of the same name. And if you would rather do very little, you can just indulge in a spot of wild swimming.
Le Puy (one hour and 25 minutes) is renowned for its delicious lentils. Stock up at a local market, then linger in the town to check out the Cathédrale Notre-Dame-du-Puy, with its striped façade, or climb up to see the monumental statue of Notre-Dame de France, from where there are spectacular views of the surrounding area.
