- Shaded site a short walk away from the riverside in the Cèze Valley
- Surrounded by hikes and cycling and a 35-minute drive from Barjac
- Miniature golf course, play area and a pétanque court on site
It’s no secret that the Cèze Valley has some mightily stunning spots, and Camping Municipal La Plaine is certainly one of them. Set just a short walk from the riverside and with shade from trees, the dog-friendly site is not just stunning, but very much relaxing too.
Bessèges village is just 15 minutes’ walk away from the site. Its 19th-century church, watchtower, mill, castle and hunting lodge are a clue as to how old the village is. Strolling around is more than entertaining, but wait until you visit one of the guinguettes – that’s the French name for a tavern (originally from Parisian suburbs and serving green wine, but a little different nowadays).
In the Cévennes Gardoises, a short drive away from Ardèche and Lozère, the site has a gorgeous Med climate. It’s partly this climate which has made the local hikes so lovely. Whether you depart straight from the village or take a little drive further afield, you may stumble upon old terraces where vineyards, olive trees and chestnuts were once cultivated.
Camping Municipal La Plaine is mightily friendly too. Families are very welcome; kids are likely to spend many hours playing around the play park on site or sharpening up their putting skills on the miniature golf course. A pétanque court is also on site, along with a barbecue area and practical facilities like washing machines and two toilet blocks.

Local attractions
Fancy seeing a French castle? Have a few for good measure… Château le Cheylard d'Aujac (25 minutes’ drive) is a 12th-century hilltop castle. Château de Montalet (15 minutes) is also up high, overlooking the Cèze valley.
There’s a castle in Joyeuse (40 minutes) too, a hilltop village over the river Baume. Saint-Ambroix (15 minutes) has several more, all medieval. The medieval town centre and its chapel are perhaps most memorable.
Grotte de la Cocalière (20 minutes) is worth putting aside a whole afternoon if you have the time to spare. The caves, pools and rocks were formed in the Jurassic times; a train ride is a must there, too.
And where else might you journey to? The Renaissance town of Barjac (35 minutes) is a worthy spot, or there’s Labeaume (50 minutes) alongside sheer limestone cliffs, which has access to gorge hikes and a riverside square
