  • Peaceful and leafy Aude campsite on the edge of Villeneuve-Minervois
  • Gouffre Géant de Cabrespine 10 minutes’ drive; Carcassonne 20 minutes
  • Spacious glamping units with kitchens and bathrooms; pool and Jacuzzi
When you’re looking for a peaceful Languedoc-Roussillon hideaway to call your own for a few days, take a look at Domaine de l’Aven, a laid-back spot tucked under a canopy of oaks and pines on the outskirts of the small Aude village of Villeneuve-Minervois. Open plan in style, each spacious accommodation unit comes equipped with the kitchen basics including microwaves and kettles, all bedding and toiletries in the shower rooms, plus seating areas out on the decking with peaceful views over leafy gardens. The swimming pool and sundeck are open from May to October and sit among mature trees a few steps away from the units. Other shared facilities include a Jacuzzi (reservations required, please) as well as free use of a washing machine and dryer in the laundry room. If you feel like a break from the car on your holiday in the Aude, there are restaurants and cafés as well as a bakery, greengrocer, butcher and pharmacy in the centre of Villeneuve-Minervois (five minutes’ walk). Hikers and mountain bikers can also jump onto numerous trails along the Clamoux River straight from Domaine de l’Aven, and a budget-friendly local bus service allows you to explore your surroundings in the summer months.

Local attractions

The historic city of Carcassonne (20 minutes’ drive) is likely to be your first port of call, what with its magnificent fortified Château Comtal, the views over the River Aude from the city walls and an outrageously pretty medieval town where cobbled streets are lined with smart boutiques and restaurants. Overlooking the River Cesse, gorgeous Minerve (40 minutes) is a quieter spot for pottering around equally ancient streets and impressive ramparts. To explore the region’s spectacular natural phenomena, head for the cave system at Gouffre Géant de Cabrespine (10 minutes), where you can take boat tours of the subterranean river or fly across caverns on a zipwire. The Grotte de Limousis (15 minutes) is also worth exploring for its stunning displays of stalactites and stalagmites. There are fantastic views over the Montagne Noire and Corbières mountain ranges from Le Roc de l’Aigle (10 minutes), and remote hikes to be had along the limestone Gorges du Brian (35 minutes), where you can stop off to picnic by the river and go wild swimming if you need to cool down on sunny days.
