  • Peaceful tree-filled park with shaded pitches near the Loue river
  • Five kilometres from the huge Chaux Forest
  • Two big outdoor pools with helter-skelter slides
Camping Le Val d'Amour is a leafy and lush family park near the banks of the Loue river, between Burgundy and Switzerland in the peaceful Val d'Amour region of the Jura department. It's a holidaymakers' haven, with easy access to local walking, cycling and horse riding trails through the humungous Chaux Forest, and is 20 kilometres from Dole and 15 kilometres from Arbois. Set across almost four hectares, the site's facilities include a pétanque pitch and two pools (one for adults and one for kids, lifeguarded between 2pm and 7pm), and staff organise sporting competitions for guests throughout the summer season. The closest tributary of the Loue river is 500 metres from the site; reach the Loue itself in a pleasant 20-minute stroll for fishing and paddling. There's oodles to keep kids entertained too, with organised activities and entertainment as well as the separate kids' pool with big waterslides, plus swimming lessons during peak season if they need it. The site also has a big playground with a trampoline, as well as green space for football, basketball and volleyball games. Grownups are also well catered for – while the kids are keeping themselves busy, you can book in for a relaxing massage before hitting the tiles at one of the site's regular dance evenings, or take a slightly more peaceful nighttime dip in the pool. Handily, there are several shops in the village, including a nearby bakery and a wine shop, plus a bar and grocery shop, a supermarket, a fromagerie, a pharmacy and a post office.

What customers say

Great family spot with heaps of space & activities. Loved the big pool with slides & evening shows. Staff were legends – super friendly & helpful. On-site pizza went down a treat, and the location was handy. Most found the facilities clean, though a few spotted small oversights. Some experienced a bit of night noise, and the pizza van had limited hours for some.

Liked Great location for visiting nearby cities. Very friendly staff. Food available from an onsite snack bar. Great climbing frame for kids. Shower facilities were very good.

Every day a different vendor sells local wine, crafts etc which was lovely.

Disliked Not enough toilets for the amount of people on the site. Half were squat toilets. Toilet roll dispensers are outside the cubicles so you have to guess how much you need. No soap to wash your hands.

Decent size pitches but be mindful that many have apple trees in the middle so can cause an issue depending on the size/shape of your tent. All the fallen apples then attract lots of wasps.

Not the campsite’s fault but we visited in August and there were so many flies it was unpleasant especially when you’re eating.

The campsite itself is actually a lovely site with mature planting but it felt very crowded and I can only assume there are many seasonal or permanent pitches which give the site a very disheveled appearance. Old caravans that have had makeshift wooden shacks built around them etc. it just changed the feel of the place.

The swimming pool is not as nice as the photos.

Local attractions

France's second-largest forest, Chaux, covers more than 20,000 hectares, and there are loads of woodland walking, horse riding and cycling trails to traverse elsewhere; you can reach the foothills of the Jura in 15 kilometres. Canoeing and kayaking are available at Quingey, about 30 kilometres from the site's local town of Ounans, and the spa town of Salins-les-Bains is less than 20 kilometres away. Salins is best known for its UNESCO-listed salt mines, open to the public for guided tours of its underground chambers. There's also the Salt Museum there to tell you all about the town's salty story, so plenty here to fill a day. For vino quaffing and vineyard tours, visit the little town of Arbois, 15 kilometres from base. The town's also home to the Jura Vineyard and Wine Museum, set on the ground floor of Château Pécauld and made up of an outdoor vineyard-style area and an indoor exhibition space. Other sights to behold include Besançon and its 16th-century Granvelle Palace; the Cathedral of Besançon; the Museum of Time and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Besançon Citadel.
