Chemins de Traverse

- Haute-Marne eco-camping on the edge of the Parc National de Forêts
- Auberive Abbey five minutes’ drive, and Langres 25 minutes
- Donkey treks and forest walks available directly from the pitches
Peace and serenity surrounded by forested hillsides – that’s what you can look forward to at Chemins de Traverse, a sustainable campsite set on the edge of the Parc National de Forêts in Haute-Marne. With only a handful of accommodation units and plenty of space between each one, there’s little to disturb you here except the rustle of trees and the song of birds.
Yes, a stay at Chemins de Traverse is about recharging your batteries on spacious camping fields where the accommodation units – all with spectacular woodland views – border the forest. Long walks among the trees beckon; you can hike solo or join a guided trek with the resident donkeys as company. They’ll carry your gear for you too, and in their downtime they keep the camping fields neatly grazed in an eco-friendly manner.
Forest hikes not for you? Hang out on site with a good book, and if you need provisions for cooking supper on your barbecue, nip down to the grocery store in the sleepy village of Auberive (five minutes’ drive). While you’re there, take a tour of the Cistercian abbey and its calm, verdant grounds.

Local attractions
All manner of hiking needs are covered in the Parc National de Forêts. If you need to keep the kids sweet, take the gentle loop around Auberive to the 12th-century abbey (25 minutes’ stroll). If more strenuous exercise is required, head to the limestone formations at Tufière d’Amorey (an hour and 15 minutes from Auberive), or stride out across the marshes of the Marais de Chalmessin (three hours).
Get well away from the Haute-Marne tourist trail on a trip to pretty Langres (25 minutes’ drive), where you can peer over at the Vosges Mountains (and occasionally glimpse Mont Blanc) from the medieval ramparts. After that, have a wander around the cobbled streets of the old town, admire the giant tapestries in Cathédrale Saint-Mammès, and see how aristocrats lived in times gone by at the 16th-century Maison Renaissance.
Stop off to see the lichen-covered dolmens near Bugnières on your way to historic Chaumont (45 minutes), where there’s jewel-coloured stained-glass in the Basilica of St John the Baptist and cute nativity figures in the Museum of the Nativity. While you’re in town, be sure to have a squint at the mighty 19th-century viaduct that soars over the Suize River.
