Next to the waters of the Loire, surrounded by vineyards and in a region of long bike rides through green French countryside… park yourself at Camping Les Portes de Sancerre for a cracking Cher department time. This family-friendly site has easy access to Loire river cycle trails, as well as to the AOC Sancerre wine region and historical highlights like Aubigny-sur-Nère, Nevers, French pilgrimage routes and the local medieval town of Saint-Satur. Department capital Bourges is about 45 kilometres away. A shop and bakery are 600 metres from the site and the local shopping centre is a kilometre and a half away. A public pool, available for a small charge, and a tennis sports centre are within 300 metres. On-site facilities include a small grocery shop, a playground, a pétanque court and a ping pong table. There's also a motorhome service point, free wifi and a toilet and shower block.

Liked: Pitches were a good size, with plenty of hedges for screening.
Sanitary facilities clean and well maintained. Great area for washing dishes.
Very reasonable price (we stayed in low season (September))

Disliked: Walk up to Sancerre hilltop village is 3km but you get great views over the countryside and Loire river.

Brilliant facilities, shower blocks very spacious and very clean. Has everything you need. Owner was lovely.
We stayed as a young couple travelling across Europe, was only supposed to be a one night stop over but the place was so nice we decided to stay there an extra night.

Liked: Dit is in potentie een fijne rustige camping. Het vernieuwde sanitair ziet er super uit als het net is schoongemaakt. De plek van de camping is ook heel mooi ingeklemd tussen de Loire en het dorp met bakkerij. De voorzieningen rondom de camping zijn ook dik voor elkaar.
We komen vast nog een keer terug om te ervaren hoe rustige het er in september kan zijn.

Disliked: Het begon al niet goed bij aankomst. We hadden een plek geboekt met elektriciteit. Bij aankomst bleek de receptioniste het daar niet mee eens te zijn en moesten we daar dus extra voor betalen. Bij boeking hadden we gevraagd om een rustige plek. We kregen een plek tegenover de speeltuin. De enige andere keuze die er was, was naast de tennisbanen van het dorp (prima). Maar ook naast een groep Engelse gasten (4 gezinnen), die onze nachtrust flink hebben verziekt. Dikke pech, want in potentie is het een hele fijne rustige camping (dat bleek op onze laatste dag). Verder mag het gloednieuwe sanitair wat beter/vaker schoongehouden worden en is er wat onderhoud aan het groen nodig zodat de staplaatsen volledig kunnen worden benut. Wij konden de tent pas goed opzetten toen we wat takken gesnoeid hadden.

Disliked: Booking website said they had WiFi and an on-site shop, both of which were essential for our stay. There was no WiFi and the shop was very very limited. It was a 30 minute walk to the nearest grocery store and back again.

Chemieabfluss, geht kein Wasser zum Nachspülen.
Etwas mehr Detailpflege des Platzwartes wäre notwendig.
Kein WLan, heute nicht mehr „State of the Art“

Local attractions

History first? Local medieval town Saint-Satur is a kilometre from Sancerre, a village built up around a medieval castle and still with centuries-old houses in its Old Town. Within about 22 kilometres from Saint-Satur are La Charité-sur-Loire and the Abbey Church of Notre-Dame, once one of the wealthiest monasteries in France and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site as one of the places on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela. Another historical option is Aubigny-sur-Nère, the French town with Scottish and Stuart connections that still celebrates its French-Scot alliance on Bastille Day. You could also have a look at Nevers, dating back to Roman times and with a spectacular Ducal Palace and Place de la République. And then biking… among the many Loire Valley cycle routes is the 11-kilometre ride from Sancerre to Couargues to Pouilly-sur-Loire, past the Sancerre vineyards and with spectacular views over the Loire valley over to the woodland of Puysay in the distance. And then wine? Over 300 vineyards are in the area in and around Sancerre, covering a few thousand hectares of hills. Several of them have wine caves where visitors can stop to try and buy the wines; if you're in the region to pick up some French vino, make the wine centre of the Maison des Sancerre an early stop. The wine regions of Pouilly-sur-Loire and Menetou Salon are also close by.
