  • Peaceful and simple Brittany site on the edge of Forêt de Coat-an-Noz
  • Belle-Isle-en-Terre five minutes' drive; half an hour to the coast
  • Easy access from the main road; great fishing nearby in Le Guic river
Sometimes, all you need is a simple setup – a quiet rural location with just the essential amenities, no noisy entertainments and plenty of space to relax. If this sounds like your kind of thing, book yourselves a Brittany break at Les Vieilles Forges Camping. This peaceful family-run site is on the edge of the Forêt de Coat-an-Noz, a lovely wooded area with miles of paths to walk or cycle along. There’s some excellent fishing (both coarse and fly) in the nearby Le Guic river (known as one of France’s cleanest rivers) and a protected wetland area on site where you might spot kingfishers or otters if you sit quietly for a while. The grass pitches here are simple, spacious and sheltered by trees, and they’ve got access to shared facilities including toilets, showers, a washing-up area and a chemical disposal point. It's a laidback site where all guests are welcome, whether you’re travelling with kids, dogs, friends, a partner or just your good self. The vibe at this site is very much one of rural peace and quiet, but it's also a very handily located place, with a local bar 10 minutes’ walk away and the amenities of Belle-Isle-en-Terre about five minutes’ drive away. There’s easy access directly from the main road (no small country lanes to navigate here) and the N12 passes about 10 minutes’ drive away. The handy road access also means that the beaches of the Côtes-d’Armor are about half an hour’s drive away.

Unpowered grass site

Liked Beautiful setting. Plenty of shady pitches. Very clean and comfortable toilet and shower block. The owners were helpful and friendly. A lovely place to stay, great forest walks, interesting villages and the seaside! A few minutes from the Nationale 12, and Belle Isle en Terre village with all services.
Set in what was for hundreds of years a large working forge and metallurgy site, now mostly returned to nature but the owners have family connections and can tell you all about it. We loved it

Powered grass site

Liked It has only been open two weeks and is very much a work in progress, but a warm welcome and a reasonable pitch. Interesting area with lots of walking and a history of iron smelting from the Middle Ages. If they manage to succeed with the project it will be an excellent site. We may return in a couple of years to see how it is going.

Local attractions

Bring your boots and/or your bike, because there are lots of splendid trails to follow nearby – perhaps you’d like to stroll to the pretty village of Loc-Envel (about 20 minutes away on foot) or take a walk through the neighbouring forest. If you’re concerned about losing your way, the team on site can offer guided walks in French and English. For more nature-based outings, head to nearby Belle-Isle-en-Terre (five minutes’ drive) for L’Aquarium des curieux de nature or walk among the towering plants at La Vallée des Bambous (10 minutes). The almost 200 sculptures at the Valley of Saints (half an hour) are well worth a visit too, for a day out that combines art and outdoor scenery. In Brittany you're never that far from the coast, so some seaside days should certainly be on the schedule while you’re here. That might be a stroll around medieval Morlaix, a hike on part of the GR34 long-distance trail, a birdwatching boat trip to Les Sept-Îles, sunset over the Pink Granite coast, family time on one of the sandy beaches… it’s all about half an hour away by car.
