  • Quiet site on a former wine-growing farm with a family atmosphere
  • Surrounded by Bordeaux vineyards; 35 minutes from the edge of the city
  • Pool, sauna, fitness room, playground, restaurant and bar
Campsite Le Pressoir is 15 minutes from the town of Saint-Émilion, near the Dordogne and 35 minutes' drive from the edge of Bordeaux... and did you know that the Romans were cleverly planting vineyards in this area in the second century? Oui, this is wine region: very much so, as the site is set on a former wine-growing farm. Le Pressoir is a quiet and relaxing site, set on said farm and under the shade of long-established oak and pine trees. It has a pool and a sauna (yes, this is a relaxing site), and a traditional restaurant and bar, Brasserie le Pressoir, which serves up local specialties on its varied menu along with tapas and wine specials and takeaway in summer. Aqua gym, sports tournaments, nightly entertainment and a kids' club are organised in high season.

Liked: The electricity worked!

Disliked: Reception did not open until 3pm. When it did "open" the door was unlocked but no-one there for another 20 minutes. I know its January but the place looked terrible - pools half filled with dirty water. Only one combined shower and toilet available ( the disabled) for the 3 units staying overnight. This was not heated. The only water available was from the chemical toilet disposal.

Liked: Nothing

Disliked: the site manager was not there, all the facilities were locked up, there was no electricity at the only available pitches, as it had been disconnected. We arrived before 5pm. Reception doors chained up. We phoned the owner who said he would turn up in the morning! We phoned again and pointed out that although he knew we were coming he was not there to give ud a key to the toilets etc. He said he would arrive in ten minutes. WHen he did not arrive he said he would be there bu 6pm. We left at 18.20 and went to a nearby campingcarpark.com which had better facilities for a fraction of the price

Liked: Nothing. We had paid for 2 nights but left after 1

Disliked: Felt like immigration centre. Many male youths just hanging around through our pitch. Playing loud music and shouting. Collecting scrap wood and site signs/fence wood for a bonfire in the communal BBQ area. Didn’t feel safe. Not the peaceful area as advertised on website. Pool was green ! Site looked very rundown even new toilet/shower block smelt very bad like blocked drains!

Liked: The enthusiasm of the staff / reception young man who went over and above to tidy the place for us- the only campervan visitors for 2 nights.
The sanitary facilities were great once cleaned and key for our personal use.
Local wine sold on site is lovely.
Bar in evening was good and few outside people attended which made it lively.
Lots of vines in fields to walk around- dog walks a plenty.
Fairly close to lovely town of Saint Emilion- but get there early enough to be able to park up.
Good level pitch with shade if sunny.

Disliked: The fact that the camping season is nearing its end and loads of vineyard workers staying on site in cabins and static vans.
The numbers of male workers who appeared to resent us having access to the facilities and generally being there made us feel uncomfortable- we were glad we only booked 2 nights.
Workers there for September and October- outside of that maybe better for most travellers.
The pool area was also out of bounds and in a poor state- green sludge!

Liked: Location was very nice. The restaurant and play areas were also nice. Unfortunately problems with the water meant the swimming pool was closed and no shower facilities. We were offered the use of an empty static home to use.
The manager was very very friendly and accommodating. Spoke good English and helped us settle in.
The pizzas in the restaurant were also decent for a good price

Disliked: It had a feel that people lived full time which was a little off putting.
As mentioned the swimming pool and facilities didn’t open and not in use. It would have been nice to have been offered a discount to account for this.

Local attractions

Golfers rejoice: a 10-minute drive from Camping Le Pressoir is a top-notch golf course designed by Tom Doak, named as one of the top courses in France. Fishing, cycling and canoeing are also available locally. Saint-Émilion is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and its history goes back to prehistoric times. It's one of the top areas for red wine areas in Bordeaux, as recognised by the toga types all those years ago: sample Merlot and Cabernet Franc here along with a bit of Cab Sav. A large chunk of Bordeaux is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, mainly because of its 18th-century heyday. Sights to see include its 362 monuments historiques (only Paris has more), the biggest square in Europe at the Esplanade des Quinconces, the 18th-century Grand Théâtre and Saint-André Cathedral and the many churches.
