You may already have heard that Denmark is rather famed for its fjords. Which is not a whit surprising, since the country is made up of islands galore – over 400 in total – which make for rather a lot of water in between. One fab fjord is the watery body of Hjarbæk, just off the Jutland sound of Limfjorden a few kilometres from Løgstrup. This peaceful place is a watersports and wildlife haven, made up of a bird protection area and a Natura 2000 international nature conservation region. Windsurfing, kitesurfing and paddleboarding are all popular on the fjord's waters, or you could take a canoe out instead, lent to you for free by the friendly family team at Hjarbæk Fjord Camping right on the fjord's edge. The site is the starting point for several cycle routes and a circular walk to and from the local village, and there's loads to do for kids and their grownups around the grounds, including dips in the pool or slips down the waterslide, racing around the go-kart track, pétanque court or playground, bouncing out excess energy on the trampoline, or setting up tournaments of table football, billiards, air hockey and arcade games at the games room. Local town Løgstrup is under 10 minutes' drive away for supplies and cafés. Back on site, foodie needs can be sorted at the barbecue area, two communal kitchens and grocery shop, or the small café, which has a menu of light dishes and good coffee.

Local attractions

Options among different elements are yours to pick from straight from the site: borrow a canoe and get out onto the fjord, take one of the bike routes from the grounds, or potter along the Path of Hearts four-kilometre walking trail from the site to Løgstrup. Within driving distance, flutter along for a subterranean tour of the limestone mines of Daugbjerg Kalkgruber, along a kilometre of lit passageways via treasure hunt activities for kids. The mines are Denmark's biggest winter hibernation site for bats; tour guides will regale you with batty facts about them and the caves as you amble along underground. Also underground, over 60 kilometres of passages await at the mighty Mønsted Kalkgruber caves, some the size of cathedrals. A passage leads to two underground lakes, where a multimedia show projects the story of the caves onto the water and the cavern walls; you could also take the mine train, running along from the old factory and past the open pit to deep inside the mine. There are bats in these caves too – around 18,000 – so check before setting off that the caves are open to the public, as they close during the bats' mating and flying season.
