Between Velebit mountain and the sea, Vrata Velebita is a rather convenient place to base yourself for escapes surrounded by natural beauty. A dog-friendly place this is, and a destination for the adventurous sorts too – in the middle of Velebit Nature Park, it’s surrounded by lush forest and karst peaks, meaning that hikes are all around. On top of that, to go for dips in the Adriatic, you need only drive or walk to the pebbly beach four kilometres from the site. On the way down to that pebbly shore at Duboka Kruščica beach (10 minutes' drive or an hour's walk), there are cultural Mirila stone monuments to check out 300 metres from the site. But first, you might want to stop by at the site’s ethno house, which has an exhibition on beekeeping, honey and brandy tasting 50 metres’ walk from the site. As well as imparting knowledge on Velebit tradition and heritage, Vrata Velebita is a wildlife haven with all the scents and sounds of nature around. That doesn’t mean it’s lacking in facilities. Not at all – there are shared toilets and showers, a small kitchen, a barbecue (this is not available between July and August due to the fire risk) and tables and benches. Ljubotić (two minutes’ drive or 15 minutes’ walk) is a starting point for those of you who have arrived here with the aim of mountaineering around Stap, Kamena Galerija and Renjovac. Supplies can be picked up from the shop in Tribanj, five minutes’ drive from the site. After more active pursuits? Paklenica National Park is 20 minutes’ drive from the site – canyons, pine forests, caves, wildlife and hiking trails lie in store there.

Liked: Lieu paisible et bien entretenu . Campement au calme . Endroit ressourçant . Possibilité d’utiliser un frigo commun , à disposition machine à laver le linge . Équipement très pratique . Séjour vraiment très agréable au milieu de la montagne et à seulement 20 minutes des plages .

Local attractions

This is an excellent base for exploring around Paklenica National Park (20 minutes’ drive). There are easy or trickier hikes, as well as trails fit for bike rides through the pines. Wildlife fans can try to find animals such as bats, deers and falcons in the park, as well as birds of prey in the educational centre. If you’re an experienced climber, you’ll be in the right place – there’s a handful of climbing locations around Paklenica National Park. A cave, too – just head to Manita peć (25 minutes). For historic sites, the park also has a 19th-century watermill named Marasovic Mill and an ethno house, which shows what life was like in older times. Those of you who consider beach days a holiday essential can head to more coves in and around Starigrad (20 minutes). Further on, though, there’s water of a different kind. Kanjon Zrmanje Od Obrovca Do Ušća (40 minutes) is a river canyon and a hot destination for river rafting.
