Ready for a spot of wild camping with far-reaching views of Grampians National Park (15 minutes’ drive)? Then consider making Grampians Bush Camp your base when exploring this area of forest-covered mountains, swimming lakes and dramatic waterfalls. This is a family-friendly campground, with shaded sites on level, natural bush terrain. Amenities are onsite drinking water onsite, but what Grampians Bush Camp does have (besides its splendid location, of which more in a minute) is heaps of resident wildlife, and the entire family can join in spotting curious kangaroos, deer and emus. After seeing kangaroos hopping around near your site, you might not be in the mood for kangaroo steak on the barbecue (which is provided); you’ll find plenty of grill able alternatives in the convenience stores of nearby towns; alternatively, there are supermarkets in Stawell (5 mins away ). The main attraction here is Grampians National Park, of course.

Local attractions

The kangaroos at the campground not enough to satisfy your passion for wildlife? Halls Gap Zoo (five minutes’ drive, or a half-hour walk) more than steps up to the plate with meerkats, giraffes and red pandas, plus native species such as wallabies and dingos. As part of their Animal Encounters sessions, you can feed cheetahs and handle meerkats. Check out the rock art at Bunjil’s Shelter (15 minutes), in the Black Range Scenic Reserve. This cave painting, which dates back at least a millennium, portrays Bunjil (the creator, according to Aboriginal lore) flanked by two dingos. While you’re in Grampians National Park, don’t miss the dramatic MacKenzie Falls (half an hour), which you can admire from the observation deck high above the MacKenzie River. For a different perspective, climb the 260 steps leading right down to the base of the cascade, where you might also feel the water spray on your face.
