  • Riverside campground on a historic homestead in western Victoria
  • Grampians National Park 50 minutes’ drive; Halls Gap about an hour
  • Off-grid sites on the Glenelg River; fire pit and landscaped gardens
When you’re looking for a Victoria campground with a bit of history behind it, Fulham Homestead springs to mind. Set on a 180-year-old historic homestead – and now a hobby farm – with extensive landscaped gardens, the spacious camping sites offer good access for caravans and large motorhomes with Glenelg River or creek-side views. There’s a fire pit for grilling up an alfresco feast, as well as picnic tables, an upcycled seat made out of wagon wheels and a vast wooden swing dotted around the property. You can spend time fishing, wild swimming and kayaking on the river, or curl up with a good book overlooking the peaceful creek. The owners have dogs of their own, and your four-legged pals are very welcome too. You will also get visits from the homestead’s pet sheep, local kangaroos and wallabies, and the kookaburras will laugh at you loudly in the mornings. Please note that the sites have no drinking water, electric hook-ups or bathrooms, so all guests are required to be fully self-contained with their own toilet/shower facilities. It’s also asked that you leave no trace of your presence on departure.

Local attractions

Fulham Homestead is an ideal base for sporty types, with hiking, fishing, biking and kayaking all available around the campground. If you’re quiet as you go about your daily business, you may catch sight of wombats or koalas as well as the inquisitive wallabies and kangaroos. Rocklands Reservoir (25 minutes’ drive) is another scenic spot for swimming or fishing for cod and trout, where you can often see kangaroos grazing on the grassy shoreline. You can practise putting on the local golf course (15 minutes), or go climbing in Grampians National Park (50 minutes). While you’re there, admire the views over Lake Bellfield from the top of Halls Gap (just over an hour), or take a selfie with the spectacular MacKenzie Falls (an hour and 10 minutes) as a backdrop. Black Range State Park (half an hour) is known for its bizarre granite rock formations set among bushland, which you can explore on challenging waymarked trails or family-friendly walks; there are also several caves in the park containing sacred Aboriginal art.
