  • Café and shop; watersports, bike hire, fishing and woodland walks
Picked Pembrokeshire as your destination because of the scenery? You’ll be able to soak it up at all hours when staying at Llys-y-frân Lakeview Campsite – this family-friendly site is on the banks of Llys-y-frân Reservoir, with fabulous watery views (at their best at sunset, thanks to the site’s west-facing location). You may well want to spend a fair amount of time simply looking out over the lake while you’re here – perhaps from a table at the Lakeside Café, which serves up hot drinks and sweet treats as well as a lunchtime menu of hot food showcasing top-notch local produce. Alternatively, bring your fishing kit and settle in for a relaxed day trying to catch trout from the lakeshore or one of the electric boats. Got something more energetic in mind? You’ll be sorted too, as the terraced site slopes down to an activity centre where you can book kayaking, canoeing and paddleboarding sessions or hire bikes to hit the lakeside path or mountain bike trails. For other land-based activities, have a go at archery or channel your inner Celt with some axe throwing. For the younger adventurers, there are off-road six-wheeler ‘Crazi Bugz’ vehicles to drive, a climbing wall and an adventure playground. For something slower-paced, try woodland walks from the site, or set out a feast at one of the picnic spots. Dogs are also catered for with an agility playground. Practical facilities include hot showers, toilets in the activity centre, chemical disposal point, a washing-up area, a gift shop and wifi in the visitor centre. The village of Rosebush (10 minutes’ drive) is home to a characterful pub offering a traditional Welsh experience.

What customers say

Great spot, clean facilities, super friendly staff. Lots to do for families, especially bike tracks. Can get a bit noisy though, and watch out for muddy spots when it's wet. Shop's a bit basic.

Liked Such a beautiful place to stay. Bike tracks and walks are great to keep little ones busy!
Clean site, peaceful and very relaxing!
Didn’t do any activities but everything looked fun!

Disliked It is on the pricey side for camping and would have been great if there was some kind of takeaway/food van available in the evenings!

Liked Lovely view of the lake from the campsite. Great to be so close to the activities, pump track and park. We didn’t leave the area for three nights. No need! Clean campsite. Friendly and helpful staff. Reasonable prices for the activities too. Perfect family adventure holiday.

Disliked The lack of etiquette at the site with people constantly walking across our pitch to get to the toilet instead of walking around on the path. We were amazed at the amount of campers who thought this was acceptable even when we were sitting outside!!
Slightly strange set up with the toilets and changing rooms in that they seem to be designed for the activity centre and then left open for the campers all night. Not really a dislike but weird if you aren’t expecting it!
And only two sinks for washing dishes meant there was frequently a queue for washing up!!
Would be good for the cafe to stay open longer for something to eat in the evening. For breakfast the choice is pancakes or a breakfast bap so we think there could be a few more options, even just adding toast as an option would be amazing!! (my husband did ask if they could do egg on toast for the children and was told no).

Unpowered concrete slab campervan or trailer tent site

Liked Views, cycling, facilities and family friendly, large pitches

Disliked Felt very close to other campers as the hedges were young or has failed. Cars parked by tents and not asked to move to car park.

Powered concrete slab caravan site (disabled friendly)

Liked A lovely, clean, well kept site with fantastic views.
The visitor centre with a well stocked shop and cafe serving snacks and meals was spotless and the staff were very welcoming and helpful.
Between the visitor centre and the campsite a large building housing the amenities and activity centre catered for outdoor and water sports including fishing on the reservoir.
The centre run by qualified instructors had everything your children and adults needed for a fantastic holiday experience - cycling, mountain bike hire and track for all levels of competency, a safe kids track for the budding young riders. Climbing tower.
Water activities were very popular with qualified instructors and very helpful staff. You could also book the fishing -fly and worm fishing only and hire boats with top quality electric motors.
The path/track around the lake offered some fantastic walking through a nature lover’s paradise- plenty to see and enjoy.
Excellent.

Disliked Some of the roads were very narrow so don’t rely on your sat nav!
Motorhome and caravan users beware of low branches on the last few miles leading to the site- the local authority needs to be contacted as some of the trees grow very close to the narrow roads. (Claberstone Road)

Liked Spacious pitches, lovely scenery,
Friendly staff
Great cafe, with amazing cakes
Great activities- we hired bikes for 3 hours and went round the reservoir and did the bike trails, lots of fun.
Quiet mornings, which was great.
Relaxed evenings which was good.
Clean site,
Great location. Easy drive to the coastal.

Disliked Not enough toilets or showers, 3 of each which isn't enough for the amount of campers on site, so I just went at quiet times like early morning or late at night.
Cafe should be open for longer would be nice to have it open at tea time.
Somewhere to purchase drinks or foods after 3pm.
No discount for campers for the activities.
Could do with washing machine.
More wash up areas as only currently have 2 sinks to use which can be a nightmare at busier times.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked A lovely small campsite, with great facilities (showers and toilets shared with the activity centre, but never very busy and very new and clean).
Nice walks around the reservoir, very helpful and friendly staff, 45 mins drive from most parts of Pembrokeshire with its central location.

Disliked Would be nice to be able to have BBQs,
Pitches have a stone layer a few inches down, so hard to get pegs all the way in.

Liked I really liked the layout of the pitches. The road layout is great with a one way system but cars still ignore it.
The location is unrivalled with some great views.
The bin area is good but a lot of campers didn't segregate their waste.

Disliked The campsite has been built without any dedicated toilets, showers or washing facilities. This is wholly inappropriate.
Campers have to use the bathrooms in the activity centre that are designed for an activity centre and not for camping.
Lets detail specifics:
There are only three male toilets and no urinals. There are 49 pitches so the ratio is unhygienic. Stale and fresh urine covered the male toilets. Nobody seemed to know what a toilet brush was for. The toilets are cleaned but not regularly enough for the volume of use. Remember they are also being used by the day visitors participating in activities.
In the male toilets the sink is a trough design with three taps. No privacy exists.
How can you wash your hands having been to the toilet if they are being used by one family to clean their teeth. The Covid days are a distant memory. These sinks are only designed for hand washing. No consideration has been given to tooth brushing, shaving etc. The small children could not reach and so spat toothpaste everywhere. It would be very embarrassing if you wanted to remove a denture. The sinks are right next to the toilets so you may not find it very pleasant to clean your teeth with the smell and noise of defecation.
On four occasions I found the taps left running in the toilets.
The showers are numerous with a good flow of hot water but no privacy exists for changing. You have to walk through the activity centre in your pyjamas.
A dedicated hut has been built but only has two kitchen sinks for 49 pitches worth of pots and pans etc.

Local attractions

There’s a lot to do on site, for sure – but there’s also plenty to keep you busy when venturing out into your surroundings. The Pembrokeshire coast, for example, is less than half an hour’s drive away, for beach days in the likes of Broad Haven (half an hour’s drive), the ever-popular Tenby or its neighbour Saundersfoot (both 40 minutes). Pembrokeshire’s packed with historic places to visit too, including the lovely little city of St Davids (40 minutes), with its ancient cathedral and Bishops’ Palace. Carew Castle & Tidal Mill (35 minutes) is also worth a visit, to hear the tale of the castle’s 2000-year history and see the only restored tidal mill in Wales. If that’s not the kind of thing your kids are keen on, perhaps instead plan trips to the Pembrokeshire Llama Sanctuary (15 minutes), Folly Farm Adventure Park and Zoo (half an hour) or the action-packed Heatherton World of Activities (35 minutes) for things like paintballing, ziplines and crazy golf.
