  • Family-run site on a working farm in the rural Vale of Glamorgan
  • Llantwit Major Beach 10 minutes’ drive; Cardiff half an hour
  • Five minutes' drive from cafés, restaurants, pubs and supermarkets
Want to stay in a rural spot while still being in a prime position for trips to Cardiff (half an hour’s drive) and the coast (15 minutes)? Then you might like to stay at Cowbridge Farm Camping, a laidback pop-up site within the grounds of a family farm in the Vale of Glamorgan, about a mile and a half from the pleasant market town of Cowbridge. The main pitching field is flat and well maintained, with uninterrupted, far-reaching views over a landscape of gentle hills laced with country lanes. Facilities on site are simple, but guests do have access to portable toilets. The site is just a five-minute drive to Cowbridge’s cafés, restaurants, pubs and supermarkets. A walk in the surrounding area will reveal quaint stone churches like St Brynach's and St John The Baptist (both within 20 minutes’ walk) and historic castles like St Quentin's (half an hour). Those who prefer a spot of angling can head to Hazel Court Fishery (five minutes’ drive), while Llantwit Major Beach (10 minutes) is popular for rockpooling. Cowbridge Farm Camping is a pet-friendly site, with four-legged friends welcome to come along and join you during your stay. Any kids staying with you are also free to interact with the animals that live on the farm.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: Nothing. The pitch advertised is not the field you’re told to use. That’s now used as a car boot site

Disliked: False advertisement. The field is not the one advertised. Instead your sent through the farm yard and along a narrow mud track along the edge of a couple of crop fields to a very uneven un maintained small field. The toilet is a long walk back up the mud track to the farm yard. Neither of us felt it was suitable (we wild camp often) or safe so left. Very disappointed would not recomend at all

Local attractions

Run by the National Trust, Dyffryn Gardens (20 minutes’ drive) includes formal lawns, an arboretum and themed areas such as the fragrant Rose Garden, plus a glasshouse full of exotic orchids. Although the elegant Victorian mansion is not open to the public, it acts as a splendid background to these 55 acres of greenery. The system of sand dunes at Merthyr Mawr Nature Reserve (20 minutes) is home to the so-called Big Dipper, the highest dune in Wales. You can walk or ride a horse (you’ll need a permit for the latter) around this landscape, with its rare plants, fungi and vibrant wildflowers, including orchids. On the outskirts of Cardiff, St. Fagans National Museum of History (25 minutes) illustrates Welsh life through the ages with dozens of reconstructed original buildings, from an Iron Age roundhouse to an 18th-century woollen mill and a Victorian school. There are also farmyard animals and workshops where you can observe craftsmen at work.
