How does a peaceful hol in the very northern reaches of north Wales sound? If the answer’s an instant 'yes please', give Pencraig Campsite a go: it's in the Anglesey countryside on a smallholding next to a field full of ponies overlooking grassy green meadows. Pencraig Campsite has a good range of amenities, with modern toilets and showers plus a washing-up area. The sunset views are excellent from this site, creating a serene setting in which to stoke up the barbecue at the end of a day beachcombing around the lovely Isle of Anglesey. Shores within easy driving distance include Porth Trwyn and Church Bay (both 15 minutes); the latter has a café for filling up at as well as a small museum in an old thatched 17th-century cottage. For other eats, the local village of Valley is a five-minute drive from the site just off the island’s main coastal road with its pubs, takeaways, small shops and petrol station. A few bigger supermarkets are on the way to Holyhead less than 10 minutes’ drive away; come here for birdwatching too as it’s the gateway to scenic cliffside walks with the potential for puffin spotting at RSPB South Stack (20 minutes away). If you’ve brought a four-legged friend on the trip – as dogs are welcome at Pencraig Campsite – plenty of places for walkies are about, including around the colourful disused copper mine at Parys Mountain (half an hour away).

  • Reception is unmanned after 5 p.m.. Please inform the campground while on your way there should you expect to arrive after this time so that the team can provide information about your unit/site.
  • The reception is open until 5pm Monday to Saturday, and is closed on Sundays. When the reception is closed, please check the notice board for your pitch number.

Great spot – clean, quiet, ace views. Facilities are top-notch, really modern and spotless. Friendly owners, handy for local sights and Holyhead. A few uneven pitches and not loads on site, but most folks loved it.

Liked Everything - the location is perfect within easy reach of stunning coast and woodland. Showers were fantastic with plenty of hot water and clean. Pitches are well laid out with electric and water to each. The owners are friendly and helpful, the fire pit was a great addition to our holiday on the cool September evenings. Valley has a great hardware shop and all the big supermarkets are available a 15 minute drive away in Holyhead.

Disliked Just wish it was a bit closer so we could visit more often!

Liked Lovely site, bathroom and shower facilities were fab, and the owners were lovely.

Beautify site, and I would highly recommend a visit to Plas Cadnant Hidden Gardens while you are there as we spent a lovely afternoon walking around here.

Disliked Not really a dislike but just abit of a grumble, the washing up facilities were not undercover and as we had a very rainy week, we chose to boil the kettle for hot water and wash up at the tent to stay dry. Which is why it’s not a dislike as we just worked with what we were given.

Our pitch was also quite windy, but the owners can not control the weather so not a negative towards the site it’s self, as the site of very open with beautiful scenery and so

Liked We really enjoyed our stay at Pencraig campsite. The views were great and the toilet and shower block were very modern and spacious - something you don't see on a lot of campsites! If you dislike showering with spiders this is the campsite for you!

Disliked We had two very minor gripes. The washing up area has no cover, so if its raining be prepared to get wet while your doing the dishes. While the toilet and shower facilities were amazing, it didn't look like they have been cleaned for the duration of our weekend stay.

Liked Lovely peaceful location with view of Holyhead Mountain in the distance. Site is very well maintained, with very tidy and modern toilet block with great rainfall showers. Brilliant position on Anglesey for getting around our favourite spots and beaches on the island. Wonderful stay we'll be back.

Liked Absolutely beautiful quiet site. You could hear the cows, horses, ducks and birds. It was so peaceful. We had an electric grass pitch that was perfect.
The shower/toilet block was top class. Spotlessly clean.

Anglesey has numerous beaches to comb, including the quiet bay of Rhoscolyn (15 minutes' drive away) with calm, shallow water for paddling or kayaking and Traeth Llydan (20 minutes), a wide, sandy stretch of coastline. Llanddwyn Island is 45 minutes away – visit at low tide to reach it via the sand. For age-old history in between submerges in the sea, the Neolithic-era Barclodiad y Gawres burial chamber is 15 minutes’ drive away and the Bryn Celli Ddu Burial Chamber takes 25 minutes to reach for investigating Wales’ prehistoric history. Slightly more recent heritage can be had on tours of Beaumaris’ castle and old jail; the pretty seaside village is also tiptop for shopping in small independent boutiques and filling up in traditional pubs. Off Anglesey, about an hour and five minutes’ drive away, is the base of Wales’ biggest mountain, Snowdon. If your legs are feeling up to it, hike to the summit – or just take the train…
