Local attractions

Hikers can access the Anglesey Coastal Walk in about 10 minutes’ walk, but there are many other options for scenic rambles. You can wander through Newborough Forest (40 minutes’ drive) and cross over to Llanddwyn Island at low tide to see Twr Mawr Lighthouse guarding its headland. Or perhaps combine your walks with birdwatching at RSPB Cymru Ynys Lawd (25 minutes), where stunning seascapes of cliffs and crashing waves go hand-in-hand with the chance to see razorbills and puffins. If wildlife is your thing, then take a sea safari from Beaumaris Pier (40 minutes) and cruise to Puffin Island – you may get lucky and spot seals along the way. If you’re in Beaumaris, you really should check out the town’s UNESCO-listed castle, built as a defence fort by King Edward I in the late 13th century. Other heritage attractions on the island include Plas Newydd House and Gardens (half an hour), a stately National Trust-owned property with formal gardens overlooking the Menai Strait. Close by is spectacular Plas Cadnant Hidden Gardens (35 minutes), featuring topiary, water gardens and vibrantly planted borders.
