  • Relaxed family-run working farm in Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park
  • Excellent area for hillwalking; two seaside resorts within 10 miles
  • Bordered by a river; 55 minutes' walk away from a pub in Abergynolwyn
Rock up to this place for a stay among stunning Welsh countryside: the site is set in Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park and lies 15 minutes' drive from the seaside resort of Tywyn on the Cardigan Bay coast. Spectacularly located under the site’s namesake of Craig yr Aderyn or Bird Rock, and with splendid views of the surrounding Cadair Idris massif and open countryside, Bird Rock Campsite is a quiet and relaxed family-run working farm, spaciously laid out over four grassy acres. As this site is scenically set in national parkland, there’s plenty of handsome countryside to roam around, as well as waymarked walking trails to tramp on. The accommodation field is bordered by a little river that guests can idle beside, wade in and cast a rod into. There's no wifi or mobile phone signal here either… all the better for soaking up the peace and quiet… The site is consistently hailed by previous guests as being kept immaculately clean, and the owners are often lauded for their friendly and accommodating approach. For freshening up before or after your days of sightseeing and outdoorsy action, showers are available to use for a small fee, and a kettle and a washing machine are available over in the washing-up area for making hot drinks and sorting grubby togs. Also on site are Elsan waste points and electric hook-ups. If you need to keep supplies topped up for evening campfires, the nearest supermarket is around six miles away in Tywyn. Plenty of good local pubs serving food are around too; the nearest is 55 minutes' walk away (or under 10 minutes' drive away) in Abergynolwyn.

  • There are no bins onsite: all rubbish will need to be taken home with you.
  • The roads to the farm are made up of narrow country lanes, so can be tricky to access for those with bigger vehicles. As a river is on site, children must be supervised at all times. Cold water is free but there is a 20p charge for hot water in the taps.

Liked: We really enjoyed exploring Dyffryn Dysynni. What a stunning location. Fascinating to see Rhian and her family hard at work at the farm and in the filed, tending to new born lambs and calfs.

Local attractions

The site’s spectacular Snowdonia National Park setting among the Cadair Idris massif means that scenic hill walks are on the menu, as well as cycling and mountain biking around Cregennan Lakes or along the Mawddach Trail. For sitting back and admiring Welsh seaside scenes, take the coastal line of the Talyllyn Railway from the seaside resort of Tywyn, six miles from base, to Shrewsbury or in the other direction to Porthmadog. If you’d rather stay put on the sands or try your hand at surfing, Tywyn's beach and waves are much recommended. For varied days off base, the subterranean slate cavern zipwiring park at Blaenau Ffestiniog is well worth the hour’s drive to, or closer to home there’s a laser shooting centre in Tywyn. An alternative (and rather more sedate) option is the Centre for Alternative Technology in Corris, where visitors can learn all about how to live a more sustainable life.
