Busy evening on the campsite
Busy campsite
Grass pitches

  • Sheltered and peaceful pitches on the banks of the Wick River
  • A 10-minute walk to Wick; 25 minutes' drive to John o' Groats
  • Part of a community enterprise
What a splendid spot for a break in the Caithness countryside – the sheltered pitches at Wick River Campsite sit in a secluded and quiet location right on the banks of the Wick River, and yet they’re only a handy 10-minute walk from the various shops, pubs and takeaways of Wick. That setting also means that you’ll be within easy reach of plenty of things to keep you busy for several days – a short stroll into town gives you the opportunity to board wildlife-spotting boats, sample the delights of the Pulteney Distillery or take a bracing dip in the outdoor tidal pool (or the indoor pool if you’re not quite brave enough to face the chilly waters of the North Sea…) This is a site that’s run as a community enterprise, with all profits fed back into improving the site or contributing to local projects that will benefit visitors and residents alike. Stay here and you’ll be supporting a great cause as well as putting yourselves within easy reach of places like John o’ Groats and activities like fishing, golf and coast walks. The site has modern facilities including male and female toilets and showers, a family shower room and a disabled toilet and shower room. There's also a washing-up area and a laundry room. A play park is just next door. Dogs are welcome to stay here too and join you for walks along the riverside trails that start just outside the site (these are great for a family bike ride too).

Liked The best thing about this campsite is definitely its location, it’s beautifully situated next to the river with a lovely walk into the town via 2 foot bridges. Great for dog walks.

The toilet block is spacious with huge room within the showers and the individual toilets. The radio is left running so you’re not listening to everyone else.

A shop for every essential is well stocked and the staff are amazing attentive and friendly.

Both the grass and the hard standing pitches appear to be very well looked after.

Disliked The hard standing whilst very solid and looked after may require ramps to adjust for level.

The power is shared between multiple pitches so can be quite far, bring a long hook up cable.

Liked I honestly or I should say “we” honestly could not fault the site.
Nice size site where no matter where you were pitched you were in close proximity to fresh drinking water , toilet, shower facilities and the main reception area. As well as a large outdoor water supply/ sink for washing up dishes etc.

Staff were extremely friendly and helpful and provided you with all the information you required for your stay.

Something that sets this site apart from the rest is the additional thought that goes in for campers in tents (in particular). As you approach the beautifully modern and immaculate reception area. There is a lovely area with comfortable chairs and heated with a coffee machine where you can purchase some nice beverages and make use of charging facilities and a microwave. To the exterior, there are several picnic benches to relax outside with a vending machine for some drinks or snacks outwith the opening hours of the onsite shop.

The new shower block had 6 toilet cubicles and 6 shower cubicles that provided plenty space to shower and change within the cubicle and are open 24/7. Hairdryers provided with shaving style sockets beside each sink.

The town is walking distance with plenty shops and sites nearby if you forget anything. A beautiful wall from the campsite is also easily accessible as well as a small park for younger children. There are plenty electric hook ups and my only advice is to ensure you have a good length cable connection (minimum 10m) as some pitches are based with one point of several porches and dependant where you were based, it may require to trail a little.

WiFi worked from the tent also which was free to access too and a nice touch

Disliked My only (and I’m being very picky) was that the ground was quite rocky under the grass which posed a challenge for the pegs for the tent so ensure to take hardy pegs with you to break through. This did not impact the comfort of the ground when standing on it

From the manager: Thank you for the amazing review. We hope you enjoyed your stay and will visit us again sometime.

Regarding the hard ground for tent pegs, this is not normally a problem, but we are finding the ground is quite hard in places after the unbelievably dry April and May that we have had. June, on the other hand, has been quite wet for a few days, so as the ground soaks up the water, this should eventually solve any hard ground issues.

Lovely open site, good pitch space, excellent facilities, nice location just on…

Liked Fantastic camp site. Great facilities, new, clean and did not feel like we were on a camp site. Friendly staff. Nice lay out. Our 4th camp site of the NC500 and by far the best!! Near to Wick centre too so handy for food and anything you may need to buy. Would highly recommend and definitely come back.

Liked Site. Easy access to town via river walk
Instruction for pitches good
Wi Fi good
Showers and toilets very good. No codes required to get in

Disliked Difficult to get pegs into ground for awning.
Better for them to add gravel and have pitches level rather than having to try and level your van when leg cannot be hammered in

Regarding WiFi signal, we do try to cover all areas of the site, but the signal can sometimes be blocked by the trees. We are awaiting installation of a 2000mbps fibre conection, so will revist our WiFi repeaters at the point to see if we can imporvie site coverage for any areas that are affected.

Local attractions

Wick, of course, is the place to start – you can walk into the centre of town to visit the Wick Heritage Centre, grab a dram or two at Pulteney Distillery or head to the harbour to book a boat trip taking you out among the sea stacks and along the cliffs to see if you can spot seals, puffins and other marine life. Elsewhere along the coast, find the ruins of Castle of Old Wick (10 minutes’ drive) and Sinclair Girnigoe Castle (15 minutes), explore the intriguing stone creations at Hill O’ Many Stanes (15 minutes) or check out the natural rock formations at Whaligoe Steps (15 minutes) and Duncansby Stacks (25 minutes). Of course you can’t miss the opportunity to go up to the very north of Scotland to visit John O’Groats (25 minutes) and RSPB Dunnet Head (40 minutes). While you’re in the area, stop by at the 16th-century Castle & Gardens of Mey (half an hour) or take a detour to Reiss Sands (10 minutes) for a stroll among the dunes.
