  • Small, dog-friendly site in the Southern Uplands of Scotland
  • Access to the nine-mile Meikledale walk; a 45-minute drive to Carlisle
  • River on site for paddling; 10 minutes’ drive from a pub
Longing to stow yourself away in Scotland’s Southern Uplands for a while? You’ll have plenty of time for walking, recharging and other simple pleasures at Bush of Ewes. This dog-friendly site is set in a walkers’ haven, right at the start of the nine-mile Meikledale walk. Other hiking areas in the vicinity include the prehistoric trail at Loch Hill (five minutes’ drive) and the Langholm Hills (10 minutes). Rise and shine, fry an egg over the firepit and then take yourself for a little paddle in the river to really wake yourself up. Birds and other wildlife are frequent visitors at this peaceful site, so keep an eye out as you go along. Facilities on site include toilets and a shower. You might want to track down a Scottish castle or make your way to Carlisle (45 minutes) for a spot of sightseeing. The Lake District National Park is around an hour’s drive away too, if you fancy a day out by the lakes. The site sits on the A7, so getting about will be easy, and you won’t necessarily have to rely on your car, either, since there’s a bus stop right outside. The 95 bus goes to Langholm village (10 minutes), where there’s a small shop, a fishing lake and a pub/restaurant. Further out, Hawick (25 minutes) has a golf course, leisure centre, shops and local museum, while Canonbie (20 minutes) has a cinema and pretty stretch along the River Esk.

What customers say

A tidy, quiet spot with great views. Owners are legends! Big sites, farm animals & river access loved. Facilities clean but basic, could use a spruce. A-road noise heard by some but didn't bug most. Fresh eggs are a bonus.

Unpowered grass site

Liked Everything about this place was wonderful.
From the moment we arrived on site the friendly owners got us booked in and to our pitch.
The whole site is spotless and well maintained, even the livestock looked like show animals.
The pitches are big enough to accommodate the largest of tents, campers or caravans and still have room for a large car.
It was peaceful all day and night dispite large numbers who were there.
Set in beautiful scenery it felt so far away from civilization. Yet only a few hundred feet from an easily accessible road.
Child friendly and easy going.
Facilities were good and well maintained.

Disliked Having to leave at the end of our stay was the only thing we disliked.

Unpowered grass site

Liked Lovely relaxing site. Owners were very friendly and worked hard to ensure the guests had a relaxing peaceful stay. We were there for the local Common Riding and the owners went the extra mile organising a 7 seater shuttle bus to do runs into and back from the town.

Disliked Shower was a hit or a miss, but not a deal-breaker for our stay.

Liked Had a wonderful stay for Common Riding. The owners went above & beyond to ensure we all had a great time (helping to provide transport). The site itself is well-kept and clean. The animals made our stay even more special! The perfect place to relax & chill. We will be back!

Local attractions

The city of Carlisle (45 minutes’ drive) has a well-preserved castle that must have seen some serious action during its centuries-old life in this border city. Other attractions include a stretch of Hadrian’s Wall and a medieval cathedral. After all that sightseeing, take a rest in one of several green areas along the River Eden. For outdoor activities such as watersports, cycling and horseriding, you can make a beeline for Kielder Water and Forest Park (50 minutes). There are also wooded walks, plus stargazing events organised by Kielder Observatory and birdwatching (ospreys nest here). At the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (about an hour), you can admire the mudflats in the Inner Solway Firth, stretch out on the sand dunes at Mawbray Banks or check out the boggy pools at Drumburgh Moss, which are visited by curlews, geese and skylarks, depending on the time of year.
