  • Family-run holiday park at St Cyrus, just off the A92 in Angus
  • St Cyrus Beach 15 minutes’ walk; Dunnottar Castle 20 minutes’ drive
  • Well-maintained site; playground, shop and pub within 10 minutes’ walk
Venturing north to drive the North Coast 500 or staying around to explore more of the Angus region? Either way, family-run (and friendly) Ecclesgreig Holiday Park makes a handy base for short stops or longer getaways. It’s set in the small coastal village of St Cyrus between Aberdeen and Dundee (both about 45 minutes’ drive), with easy access to the main north-south A92. If you’re staying around for a while, you’ll have time to find the sandy beaches just 15 minutes’ walk away, and follow the wildlife walks starting right from the pitches. You can also keep the kids occupied at the Lochside Playpark (10 minutes’ walk), where there’s a bowling green and astroturf pitch for ball games as well as climbing frames. There’s a small essentials shop in St Cyrus, which also has a popular pub (10 minutes), where you can grab a pint and a bite, or they’ll also deliver your favourite takeaway if you don’t want to stir from your pitch. For bigger shopping expeditions, seaside Montrose (15 minutes’ drive) has several large supermarkets as well as numerous cafés, pubs and restaurants. The amenities on site include toilets, a shower block, a launderette and drying room, as well as a handy covered terrace in case the weather isn’t playing ball.

What customers say

A ripper campsite, kept tip-top with friendly staff. Reviews rave about clean loos, decent sites, and being close to the beach. On-site extras and new showers are a winner. A bit of building work and some sloping/windy spots were noted. Great for a chilled break!

Ecclesgreig Holiday Park – St Cyrus

From the moment I arrived, the park felt welcoming and was clean and well-presented. The staff were friendly and accommodating, which instantly made my stay more enjoyable. My pitch was great — the ground was a little hard, so I needed a mallet to peg down my tent. I texted the staff, and they brought one to me immediately, which was absolutely wonderful service.

The park is in a lovely spot, with a beautiful little forest walk right next to the campsite if you don’t want to wander too far, and the beach is just a 10-minute walk away.

There are two shower and toilet blocks: the one at the entrance is older, but I particularly liked it because it was warmer. The newer block, located up by the tent pitches, is perfectly placed for quick trips to the bathroom at night. The newer facilities are very handy, with a kitchen area, washing machines, dryers, toaster, kettle, microwave, and even free ladies’ sanitary products. I especially loved the sweets for sale with an honesty box — such a charming touch! I treated myself to some and enjoyed them on my bus journey home. There’s also a drying area for laundry, which is very convenient for longer stays.

For families, there’s a small play park with a sandpit for the kids, as well as a small pond and plenty of seating areas to relax and enjoy the surroundings. I especially liked the takeaway van serving Indian street food — that was my dinner sorted! The food was absolutely delicious and a lovely surprise to find on-site.

One small downside: the permanent residents tend to hog the BBQ area every Saturday night, so it can get a bit tricky to find a spot then. If you’re planning to BBQ on a weekend, just be prepared it might be busy.

St Cyrus itself is small and quiet, with a local shop to pick up essentials, and it more than makes up for it with its great bus service and its absolutely stunning beach. I went down via the cliff walk — it’s beautiful, but please be very careful as there’s nothing to hold onto on the way down. It’s not suitable for very young children, and I highly recommend good footwear. I went down in trainers, but walking shoes would have been much better. If the main cliff walk seems a bit steep, there’s another path to the left that’s more gradual. I didn’t walk down it myself, but it might be a better option if you want a gentler route. Another way to get off the beach is towards the nature reserve, which offers a nice alternative route back.

Overall, Ecclesgreig Holiday Park offers great facilities, a friendly atmosphere, and a beautiful location. Whether you’re after a peaceful forest walk, a beach trip, a family-friendly break, or just a cosy spot to camp with great food nearby, I’d happily recommend it to anyone visiting St Cyrus.

Liked Great wee site. Particularly liked having the food van (curry) arrive on the Saturday night. Plenty space and looks like it's been developing recently with more to come. Lovely wee forest walk for the dog.

Disliked Play park a little tired but one in the village which was good.

Liked New build BBQ area at top.

Disliked There was no grey waste drain that was designed to accommodate a motorhome or van. The level of the grey waste disposal point was higher than the water tank sumps, therefor could not naturally drain with gravity. Used flexible drain hose but would not drain. This resulted in the use of many buckets which meant grey waste was inadvertently spilling on the concreted parking area.
Suggest you incorporate a drive over drain for vans/motorhomes.
Yes there are a few smaller drains as you go down the track but cannot park here to drain as would cause unnecessary obstruction.

Liked Absolutely by far the best camping facility we’ve had the pleasure of over our many years camping or touring. The facilities are fantastic showers are clean and tidy by far the best pressure and temperature anywhere. We will be back to visit the nature reserve as it is quite frankly paradise but we’ll stay in a Pod next time as they look superb. Thanks to Doug and his team.

Liked Very friendly site. Staff very helpful both before and during stay. Pitches are a good size. Location is rural and quiet but only a short drive to bigger towns. Facilities are good with onsite washing machines and tumbles dryers, outdoor drying facilities and designated BBQ areas . Limited toilets and showers but of a good standard. Would definitely book again

Local attractions

St Cyrus National Nature Reserve (15 minutes’ walk) is a smashing spot for (hopefully) spotting skylarks and rare peregrine falcons, paddling in the North Sea and following trails through ever-shifting sand dunes. If you’re keen to see more birds, it’s a short hop to the Montrose Basin Visitor Centre (15 minutes’ drive) for the chance to spy pink-footed geese and kingfishers; there’s another sandy beach close by for summer swims. If the kids are not keen on getting in the sea, there’s an outdoor pool at Stonehaven (25 minutes), and if the weather turns bad, there’s a century’s worth of planes to be seen in hangars at Montrose Air Station Heritage Centre (10 minutes). Wait until the skies are clear before you visit legendary Dunnottar Castle (20 minutes), as its dramatic setting high on sea cliffs means it closes when it’s windy. An alternative is the 18th-century House of Dun (15 minutes), where you can learn about local life in the folk museum and tour ornate rooms and formal gardens. And Fettercairn Distillery (20 minutes) is open for tours and tasting, so you can pick up single malt as a Scottish souvenir.
