  • Family-run holiday park at St Cyrus, just off the A92 in Angus
  • St Cyrus Beach 15 minutes’ walk; Dunnottar Castle 20 minutes’ drive
  • Well-maintained site; playground, shop and pub within 10 minutes’ walk
Venturing north to drive the North Coast 500 or staying around to explore more of the Angus region? Either way, family-run (and friendly) Ecclesgreig Holiday Park makes a handy base for short stops or longer getaways. It’s set in the small coastal village of St Cyrus between Aberdeen and Dundee (both about 45 minutes’ drive), with easy access to the main north-south A92. If you’re staying around for a while, you’ll have time to find the sandy beaches just 15 minutes’ walk away, and follow the wildlife walks starting right from the pitches. You can also keep the kids occupied at the Lochside Playpark (10 minutes’ walk), where there’s a bowling green and astroturf pitch for ball games as well as climbing frames. There’s a small essentials shop in St Cyrus, which also has a popular pub (10 minutes), where you can grab a pint and a bite, or they’ll also deliver your favourite takeaway if you don’t want to stir from your pitch. For bigger shopping expeditions, seaside Montrose (15 minutes’ drive) has several large supermarkets as well as numerous cafés, pubs and restaurants. The amenities on site include toilets, a shower block, a launderette and drying room, as well as a handy covered terrace in case the weather isn’t playing ball.

Liked: This is a clean, friendly and well thought-out site for groups with children (and/or dogs, we also saw a cat). Great view over fields and to the sea. New facilities, well maintained and not too busy. There are two playpark and communal bbq areas/shelters available. There’s also a laundry room with kettle and toaster that were really useful esp for smaller vans. It’s warm in there too. A local pizza van came at the weekend and was popular. It’s a short cycle down to the village pub and the cliffs over the spectacular beach and sea views. There are plenty of benches here and it’s worth the many steps and walk down to the beach if able.

Disliked: It’s a bit windy/cold (early May) because the top of the site (touring pitches) is quite exposed. (One family with a large tent struggled to pitch it and eventually gave up and went to a hotel.) This also creates a bit of noise off the farm sheds and vans. An additional (hardy) shelter is useful here if you have a small van. Hopefully the site will add more fencing and trees/shrubs as they develop because additional shelter from the wind would make a big difference.

The site is only 2.4 miles away from the the beach St Cyrus Beach which is a lovely clean beach and the sea is Blue

Disliked: Only issue is there's no onsite shop but there is a morrisons shop in the village about a mile away.

Powered grass and gravel site

Liked: Great site with welcoming, friendly staff. We were in the new pitches which were well laid out, decent size and withe views to the sea. They are on a slope so levellers are essential. Facilities were new, showered were great and lots of little extras - enclosed dog area, Easter egg hunt for the children when we were there. It's about 20-25 minutes walk to the beach but worth it. Cycle route 1 goes through the village too.

Disliked: Nothing

Liked: Location was lovely, very clean site and responsive owners, would most definitely recommend.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike just an observation that it would be good to have a waste disposal drive over area, but not the end of the world and wouldn’t hinder us from visiting again 😊

We were in pitch 1 which was quite steep, levelling ramps helped slightly, noticed pitch 2 was the same but the newer area seemed to look level 👍

Local attractions

St Cyrus National Nature Reserve (15 minutes’ walk) is a smashing spot for (hopefully) spotting skylarks and rare peregrine falcons, paddling in the North Sea and following trails through ever-shifting sand dunes. If you’re keen to see more birds, it’s a short hop to the Montrose Basin Visitor Centre (15 minutes’ drive) for the chance to spy pink-footed geese and kingfishers; there’s another sandy beach close by for summer swims. If the kids are not keen on getting in the sea, there’s an outdoor pool at Stonehaven (25 minutes), and if the weather turns bad, there’s a century’s worth of planes to be seen in hangars at Montrose Air Station Heritage Centre (10 minutes). Wait until the skies are clear before you visit legendary Dunnottar Castle (20 minutes), as its dramatic setting high on sea cliffs means it closes when it’s windy. An alternative is the 18th-century House of Dun (15 minutes), where you can learn about local life in the folk museum and tour ornate rooms and formal gardens. And Fettercairn Distillery (20 minutes) is open for tours and tasting, so you can pick up single malt as a Scottish souvenir.
