What customers say

Lovely eco-site, super peaceful & pretty. Hosts are ace, pizza nights a winner. Car-free means safe & roomy pitches. Eco-loos & solar showers good, but loos can be iffy & hot water inconsistent.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked Apart from the one single person tenter on the glamping site with us, very, very quiet.
Very basic, in fact there were more beastie’(s) in the camping toilet than there were on the site.
Will not fault our hostess and partner, they were on the ball, but I’m afraid we went past them, and the site three times to the end of the track and back because of the very small poor single sign pointing to it, having to call the phone number provided before we located our host.

Disliked I assumed the HOBBITT looked like the HOBBITT because of the name. Not a thing like it apart from the octagonal shed rather than the tents erected nearby.
Definitely would not return to such a place again.
Car park Yong’s away from site and we had to lug four barrow loads up to the HOBBITT before we got in, and back again before we got out.
No disposable area for our chemical toilet we carried ourselves.
Should have been there!

From the manager: Thank you for your feedback. It is always disappointing to read that someone has not enjoyed their stay with us. I will attempt to address the points you raise here.

I have never had anyone complain the site was too quiet so that is new. I assume the suggestion here is we are not a popular site, far from it. You happened to visit us in the week following the end of the Scottish school holidays. As we are very popular with families it is normal for it to be quiet mid week at this time of year. Some might even say it was peaceful! We will never apologise for our Beasties they are key to our mission of habitat creation and environmental education.

I apologise you were unable to read the reception sign on the way in. I did give comprehensive instructions on finding us whilst you were on the phone and as I previously explained to your daughter we are also pinned on Google maps, which she assured me she would look up in advance.

I don't fully understand the comment you are making re Hobbit Houses. Our three Hobbit Houses are individually themed, come complete with a king size bed, two bunks all with memory foam mattresses and in the case of Sparrowhawk where you stayed, a double sofa bed. They have a fully equipped kitchenettes, log burning stoves, games, books and private outdoor decks. I'm afraid I don't recognise the description of them as sheds or the reference to the neighbouring bell tents which you were not staying in. There are extensive photographs of all our accommodation types and a list of equipment on our website and Pitchup site so it should have been clear what you had booked in advance. In any event, your wife was so delighted with Sparrowhawk when you checked in that she hugged me.

Our glamping accommodation is located in the North Paddock which is 100m from the carpark. It is our oldest and most beautiful meadow and as such we believe it provides the most tranquil setting on the site. Cars are not permitted on the any of our pitches so kids can roam freely, our wildlife is safe and to promote the peaceful atmosphere. We provide wheelbarrows for campers and glampers to move their gear around and make it very clear about this set-up on our website. Additionally, nearly everything you need for a stay in the Hobbit Houses is provided and you joked with me during check-in that you had overpacked and could probably leave most of it in the car.

Regarding your chemical toilet, no we DO NOT provide facilities for disposing of waste from these. Quite frankly they are an environmental disaster. Partially for this reason we also do not accept caravans and motorhomes at Greenhillock. Our waste management system has been carefully thought out and involves the natural biodegrading of waste such that no chemicals are discharged to the environment. This is a core principle of our site and one we are very open about when describing ourselves as first and foremost an eco campsite. The Glamper's Rest composting toilet is located 5m from Sparrowhawk Hobbit House.

I think the most important point I would make here is that all the information you need to make an informed choice about staying at Greenhillock is presented on our website www.greenglamping.co.uk. Eco conscious camping and glamping, conservation and habitat creation is not for everyone. However it is what we do, proudly, here and we welcome anyone who wishes to share that mission.

Regards 'on the ball' team, Kate & Stig

All good.

Unpowered grass tent site (adults only)

Liked My girlfriend and I spent two great nights at Greenhillock. What a gem of a place. Such a friendly and completely relaxed atmosphere. The location is tranquil. Our tent was pitched in a beautiful wild flower meadow. Amazing woodland surrounds the site. The design is very clever, clearly the product of years of thoughtful decision making. It all comes together to create the best campsite that we have ever stayed at. And we have stayed at many.

Local attractions

Which way first – coast or mountains? If you select the former it’s a drive of about 15 minutes to the famed seafront golf course at Carnoustie, 20 minutes to feast on seafood in Arbroath or half an hour to the spectacular sands of Lunan Bay (which the owners say is among their favourite places on earth…) Heading inland instead, mountain climbers can get to the Cairngorms National Park with a drive of 40 minutes or so. For less challenging activities, try walks in the forests, hills and streams of the Angus Glens (20 minutes’ drive) or watersports and bike trails in the nearby country parks. Make time too for a trip to Dundee (25 minutes), a city that’s got UNESCO City of Design status and attractions like the RRS Discovery, the ship that made the first successful journey to the Antarctic. On top of that, get to grips with Scottish history at Glamis Castle (20 minutes), said to be one of the finest in the land, and meet some of the more sizeable native beasts at Camperdown Wildlife Centre (25 minutes).
