Seeking a break in Scotland where you’ll be well-based for exploring castles, malt whisky distilleries and Aberdeen’s Old Town, harbour and mile-long sandy stretch? Hillhead Caravan Park has it down: a well-maintained, quiet site that’s just 15 miles from Aberdeen, around 55 minutes’ drive from the Malt Whisky Trail and right on the route of Scotland’s Castle Trail too. Where exactly is this Aberdeenshire site? Hillhead Caravan Park is in the Gordon District and bang in the middle of Scotland’s so-called ‘castle country’. It's just one mile west of the A96, the road that goes between Aberdeen and Inverness. That means that it’ll take you half an hour to get to Aberdeen by car whenever you fancy poking around the city’s museums, galleries, seafront and harbour. If you haven’t already filled up on goulash or other varied eats in Aberdeen, the site will permit you to start your own barbecue. The closest shop is just five minutes’ drive away when you’re looking to source all your important ingredients and anything you need for a picnic… There are many trails where you might want to take your picnic with you, beginning with the Castle Trail stopping at Craigievar Castle (half an hour's drive) or the working and historic distilleries around the Malt Whisky Trail (around 55 minutes’ drive). The latter heads into the Grampian Highlands, a mountain range with spectacular options for hikes, climbs, skiing and the sorts. Back on site, the facilities include a modern toilet and shower block.

Chill spot, tidy grounds, big sites, handy for Aberdeen. Staff are champs, super quiet. Toilets/showers are a bit old, some cleanliness/hot water hassles. Wi-Fi patchy for some. Still good value & peaceful enough to come back.

Liked Lovely warm welcome on arrival, quiet, peaceful site in beautiful surroundings. The shower exceeded our expectations, spotlessly clean with extra touches.
We would definitely stay at Hillhead again.

Liked Piazzola grande e verde.

Disliked Bagni puliti ma da sistemare. Vecchi…. Area scarico acque grigie poco spaziosa e con una sbarra pericolosa sé non si sta attenti. Mi sono quasi spezzata un dito.
Un’ area bagno aggiuntiva sarebbe gradita. I bagni in teoria dovevano avere un codice accesso ( fornito all’ingresso) ma in realtà non c’era nemmeno il tastierino

Liked Convenient location for Aberdeen and surrounding area.
Warden was a lovely lady (Belle) who was very welcoming and helpful.

Disliked Very basic campsite with very noisy long term campers.
Facilities limited but clean.
Only 6 amp electricity so had to use gas kettle!
Couldn’t get wifi as advertised.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked Peaceful, good flat ground to pitch on. None of the pitches are any distance from the facilities, which are perfectly good. There's a proper laundrette if required. Isabel who welcomed me was absolutely lovely. Felt safe as a solo woman.

Disliked Toilets ran out of loo roll, bring your own just to be sure.

Liked It was a nice quiet place. LOVED open access to the fire BBQ center. Bathrooms were dated but clean. Water was nice and hot. Laundry facilities were handy.

Liked Good location, pitches well spaced and good walks for dogs at the bottom of the field into the woods.

Disliked As others have said, toilet and shower block in need of updating. Felt of a 60s municipal public convenience about them, with showers often cold.
No one there on arrival.

Those of you who rate cycling, walking and mountain biking highly might want to head to the landscapes around Aboyne (40 minutes’ drive). In the same direction, visit Balmoral Castle (an hour), the Queen’s Scottish residence. A trip to these two parts will take you through both Donside and Deeside. Keeping with the historical theme, Haddo House (35 minutes) frequently hosts theatrical productions from Prince Edward. However, if it’s castles you’re intent on finding first, perhaps a stroll around Castle Fraser (10 minutes), Drum Castle (25 minutes) or Corse Castle (half an hour)? In Aberdeen, there’s excitement in a few different forms.
