Welcome to station farm

  • Secluded site on a small welcoming Somerset working farm
  • In the Avalon Marshes nature reserves, five miles from Glastonbury
  • Riverside wildlife haven with firepit for each pitch
What a spot for wildlife lovers… Station Farm is a small family-run Somerset farm on the edge of Shapwick Heath Nature Reserve and situated between the Ham Wall and Westhay Moor Reserves (3,700 acres of reclaimed wetland collectively known as the Avalon Marshes). Bring your binoculars along for a stay here – you’re likely to spot all sorts of bird life (including cranes, egrets, birds of prey and kingfishers) around here, and there are several hides within a short walk for those who’d like to settle in for some serious spotting. If birdwatching’s not your thing, look out instead for otters or head out straight from the farm onto footpaths and bike routes across the reserves (including the Bittern Trail, which goes all the way to Glastonbury, five miles away). Just next to the farm is a river that’s fab for kayaking, paddleboarding, wild swims and fishing (permit required). Sticking to dry land, there’s plenty of space for kids to run about and greet the farm animals (ponies, sheep, pigs, donkeys and free-range poultry). Each pitch is provided with a barbecue/firepit (with logs and kindling available to buy) so you’ll also have space to keep warm once evening falls. This is an off-grid site so it’s a good idea to bring a torch along; toilets, showers, drinking water and a covered washing-up area are a short walk from each pitch. For safety, there’s no parking on pitches but wheelbarrows are provided to help haul kit. (Parents, do be aware that there’s easy access to lakes, ditches and the river so you’ll still need to keep an eye on the kids.)

Middle Ground unpowered concrete and grass campervan, tent or trailer tent site

Liked A cosy site with plenty of space - not overloaded with tightly packed pitches and intermingled guy ropes like some larger camp sites.
Level field site, tent peg friendly ground, clean toilets, showers and washing up facilities, friendly owners, sociable campers, free-range kids, free-range ducks and chickens!
Scooters, wheelbarrows, trailers, mud kitchen, communal games and activities area, puzzles, board games, books. Oh and a trampoline!
Avalon Marshes Tea Shop only a one minute walk across the road so you won't go hungry.

Disliked Could do with an extra loo - a project the owners are working on for next year.

Middle Ground unpowered concrete and grass campervan, tent or trailer tent site

Liked We liked everything about this site. It’s not an understatement to say it’s the best site we’ve stayed at.
The hospitality from the owners Karl and Bethan throughout the stay was amazing. Thank you for making us so welcome, had some great chats with Karl.
The site feels like wild camping but with excellent facilities.
Toilets, showers and washing facilities were immaculate, great communal space with charging points for devices.
Fire pits and wood are available at a very reasonable price.
The site is limited to a low number of pitches so there’s loads of space and you don’t feel like your neighbour is right on top of you.
Location is perfect. Can’t wait to go back

Middle Ground unpowered concrete and grass campervan, tent or trailer tent site

Liked Such a beautiful spot. It was perfect! The kids had a fab time visiting the animals, playing on the drums in the Forrest and bouncing on the trampoline.

The adults had fun on the drums too 🤪

Middle Ground unpowered concrete and grass campervan, tent or trailer tent site

Liked Great atmosphere, very welcoming and helpful hosts, good facilities and access to washing up, toilets, fire pits etc. Not far from Cheddar and other things to do, feels very off-grid.

Disliked Toilets/showers are great but just the two units, so sometimes there's a queue.

Liked Amazing site and lovely owners! Both Karl and Bethan were very friendly and welcoming. The site itself had loads of nice touches that made out stay really enjoyable. Middle Ground unpowered concrete and grass campervan, tent or trailer tent site

Liked Lovely small campsite, perfect for what we needed. Nice flat field which is well laid out with plenty of room between pitches. Access to a river is 2 minutes away, we went for a nice evening swim. Facilities were clean and suitable for the size and number of people, and little touches like washing up liquid and bowls were nice.
Owners took time to come round and talk to you and say hi and help were required.

Disliked Nothing.

Local attractions

If you need to get your bearings, a good place to start is at the Avalon Marshes Visitor Centre (five minutes’ walk) – there’s a café here too, so you can plan your walks over a cup of coffee. Beyond your immediate surroundings, there’s plenty more to see – perhaps beginning with an outing to Glastonbury (10 minutes’ drive/half an hour’s cycle) to stroll through the town and visit the abbey and the tor. Wells (20 minutes’ drive) is another urban centre that’s worth a wander, particularly if you stop in at Europe’s first Gothic-style cathedral. For outdoor days, go for a hike around Cheddar Gorge (20 minutes) or hit the beach in Burnham-on-Sea (20 minutes). The West Somerset Railway (45 minutes) is a good option if you fancy seeing some of the scenery at a leisurely pace. Other ways to fill your days? Well, maybe delving into the caves at Wookey Hole (20 minutes), visiting Europe’s largest naval aviation collection at Fleet Air Arm Museum (half an hour) or checking out the stately home and safari park at Longleat (50 minutes)…
