  • Family-friendly farm site on the Isle of Purbeck
  • On the edge of Langton Matravers; five minutes' drive from Swanage
  • Café; adventure farm (additional fee) with a petting zoo and soft play
A family-friendly site with grassy field pitches on a working farm, Salt Pig The Farm - Putlake sits on the outskirts of the peaceful Dorset village of Langton Matravers, on the Isle of Purbeck. This is an excellent base to unwind or explore the Purbecks, whether it's walking, cycling, climbing, kayaking, coasteering or visiting tourist attractions. When you roll up here, you're free to pick any spot you like. This site is all about unwinding and soaking in the countryside views, so off-ground firepits and barbecues are welcome. On-site amenities include toilets, token-operated showers and a washing-up point. You’ll never be far from the sea on this scenic stretch of land: the site is a five-minute drive from Swanage beach and 15 minutes from Studland beach. Walks through fields to the South West Coast Path are directly accessible from the site; once there, you're on the Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and can get to spectacular views like the Dancing Ledge (check out the small sea pool…) and the caves at Winspit Quarry. The site has a small shop and an on-site café serving local produce, including breakfast and lunch. In the evenings, it sometimes opens up an offset smoker barbecue or pizza oven. Salt Pig The Farm - Putlake also has an adventure farm (an additional fee applies) with a petting zoo, a large indoor soft play area, a playground and pedal go-karts. With a bus stop and a range of footpaths just outside the site, it's easy to explore the area on foot, by bus or by car. There are car-free trails to the historic village of Corfe Castle (one hour and 15 minutes on foot or a 10-minute drive). And just in case this all-round top location wasn’t already great enough, it's also less than 500 metres from the local pub, which has a cosy beer garden. Another popular pub is a five-minute drive away – although, after a few ciders, the bus might come in handy.

What customers say

Awesome views, chill vibes, and heaps of room. Staff are legend, the cafe's a ripper, and it's dead handy for Swanage. Basic but clean loos, though some mention shower tokens. A few found pitches a bit sloped or busy, but most are chuffed and keen to come back.

Unpowered grass and earth campervan, tent or trailer tent site

Liked Lovely spacious campsite with amazing walks nearby, quick drive to swanage and 20 min from quiet lovely beaches. We had local ice creams from the cafe which were very yummy. They serve also food but we have not tried it. The campsite staff are very friendly:)

Disliked It could be easier if there could be 2 more showers if it gets busy because 2 may not be enough during bank holidays but we have been very lucky to avoid the queues. One more sink for washing dishes would be a bonus too.

Liked Lovely great field, not too many there, nice and quiet.

Disliked Not a dislike per say, more a heads up… if you’re a light sleeper, the cockerels start super early… 🤣

Unpowered grass and earth campervan, tent or trailer tent site

Liked We liked Everything!! We booked the night before, me my 13y old and 2 dogs staying in our campervan. Really friendly and helpful owners. Stunning views, 40 minute walk in to Swanage or a bus from right outside the campsite. Lots of people there but very quiet with plenty of space. 2 Showers by token (50p for 4 mins) very clean and we did not have to wait at all for the 3 nights we stayed. The cafe open 8am - 6pm serves the best food, we also brought delicious local bacon and the hazelnut brownie was incredible. The local pub, less than 5 mins walk from the site, lovely food and great service. We will 100% be back

Disliked Nothing!!

Unpowered grass and earth campervan, tent or trailer tent site

Liked Super spot in a lovely village - very short walk to an excellent pub and bus stop. We loved the little piggies and breakfast in the cafe was truly exceptional - every ingredient had been thoughtfully cooked and was delicious :)

Excellent farm shop and has wonderful countryside views, very near Swanage and Dancing Ledge.

Disliked Sloping field so probably only suitable for campervans not motorhomes.
Lack of hot water for washing up (maybe I was unlucky) and soap in the toilets.

Unpowered grass and earth campervan, tent or trailer tent site

Liked lovely quiet field with great view of rolling purbeck hills

Disliked A bit mean spirited, with token system for showers, to purchase at farm shop (only available within daytime opening hrs.. and dragged its feet on opening while we hung about from 8am waiting for someone to appear), extra charges for kids of paying guests to see farm animals or access soft play area and "DO NOT.." signs up everywhere

Unpowered grass and earth campervan, tent or trailer tent site

Liked The location and views. Quad bike selling cold drinks in the evening.

Disliked Unfortunately there's a lot to mention here.
Firstly, the site ran out of water. For ages! Saturday and Sunday morning. Secondly, the toilet roll dispensers didn't work properly so there was no toilet roll. And no soap in the soap dispenser.
There were only 2 showers and one washing up sink and there was at least 50 tents in the field.
The camping reception and cafe was one in the same so whenever you went down there to get the obligatory shower tokens (if there was any water) you had to queue in amongst everyone getting food.
Lastly, and not the campsites fault at all, but the local pub ran out of food. Luckily not beer though.

Liked Liked that you can pitch anywhere and weren't restricted for space. Very friendly staff.

Disliked We went on a busy weekend the local carnival was on and we had no water for different periods of time so toilets didn't flush and no showers or washing up facilities. Maybe it would be better to limit pitches to enable everyone to have working toilets, showers and washing up facilities

Local attractions

With a long sandy beach and shallow waters, Swanage is a popular destination for a family day at the seaside. And when you’re all beached out, you can head to Prince Albert Gardens for views of the Victorian pier and Swanage Bay, or take a ride on the Swanage Railway's heritage trains all the way to Corfe Castle and beyond. Overlooked by the ruins of 11th-century Corfe Castle, Dorset Adventure Park (10 minutes’ drive) is the place to get wet (at the inflatable water park) and/or muddy (at the assault course with cargo nets, monkey bars and mud slides). If you’re into militaria, you'll likely appreciate the displays at The Tank Museum (25 minutes), which include armoured vehicles from both World Wars, plus other conflicts like the wars in the Gulf and Afghanistan. Iconic Jurassic Coast destinations Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door are half an hour's drive away.
