  • Luxury shepherd’s hut 15 minutes’ walk from Kilmington in East Devon
  • Axminster 10 minutes’ drive; Lyme Regis and Charmouth 15 minutes
  • Set in woodland; private garden with pizza oven and barbecue
If you’re looking for a peaceful East Devon retreat with spectacular orchard views and rather a lot of luxury, then you’ve come to the right place. Set in five acres of woodland, orchards and gardens, Little Firs is a tip-top hideaway with quality mod cons and an ultra-private, fenced garden in the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. On the borders of Dorset and Devon, this chic and smart shepherd’s hut is 15 minutes’ stroll from the pubs in Kilmington village, and a handy 10 minutes’ drive from shops and markets in Axminster. With a spacious interior kitted out with lots of pretty designery touches and cosy cushions, the hut has a handcrafted kitchen with a hob, microwave and under-counter fridge-freezer (all utensils provided, you don’t need to bring a thing). There’s under-bed storage for your gear, and a nifty two-level sleeping area with double beds for up to four people, with steps leading to the upper level. A wall-mounted TV and DVD player will keep everyone happily occupied during any downtime, and the ensuite shower room has a walk-in shower and heated towel rail. All bedding and towels are provided. A woodburning stove and oil-filled radiator keep things cosy on chillier evenings, and when the weather is good, you can move outside to the covered dining area with a pizza oven and up-cycled barbecue made from an old forge.

Local attractions

If you can drag yourselves away from your lush little sanctuary, the Jurassic Coast’s fossil-hunting beaches at Lyme Regis and Charmouth are both 15 minutes’ drive away. The seaside town of Beer has lots of art galleries to browse and a popular shingle beach, while Branscombe Beach (both 25 minutes) is just the spot for seaside hikes in fresh Devon air. Heading back inland, check out the antiques stores in buzzy Honiton (20 minutes), or head for Axminster (10 minutes) to learn about the local carpet industry at the town museum in the Old Courthouse. If you fancy a gourmet night out, book ahead for foodie treats at Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s famed River Cottage restaurant (also 10 minutes). Kids part of your holiday? They’ll probably love you forever if they get to spend the day on the waterslides and rollercoasters at Crealy Theme Park and Resort (35 minutes), and you’ll certainly be their favourite person if you give them the chance to cuddle rescue donkeys at The Donkey Sanctuary (25 minutes).
