Grass pitches with rural views
Pitches

  • No-frills camping 10 minutes’ drive from East Grinstead in West Sussex
  • Ashdown Forest 10 minutes’ drive, and Tulleys Farm 15 minutes
  • Grass pitches a short walk away from Weir Wood Reservoir
Liking the idea of a campsite within walking distance of the water? Then you’ve hit the sweet spot with Kingfisher Campsite, 10 minutes’ drive from East Grinstead in West Sussex, and just a 10-minute walk from Weir Wood Reservoir for alfresco adventures and hiking routes. It's also only a 10-minute drive from the Kingscote Estate vineyard. Spacious grass pitches are level and surrounded by trees, and there’s plenty of space on the camping field for kids to run around or for you to relax as you soak up your rural surroundings. There are water taps available, but everything else you’ll have to bring in with you – one very big plus, however, is the shower block with functional, clean facilities and plenty of hot water for freshening up after a day’s adventuring in the open air. Nearby Weir Wood Reservoir is a popular centre for birdwatching, fishing and dinghy sailing. There are a few pubs within five minutes' drive of the site, and supermarkets are just over in East Grinstead, around 10 minutes' drive away. This is the High Weald National Landscape, so there are plenty of walking trails and historic locations in the local area too.

What customers say

Great views & nature vibes. Campers loved pitching up anywhere, roomy sites & nearby paddleboarding/walks. Basic facilities mostly fine, hot showers ace. Watch out for road noise, flights, and muddy bits after rain. Toilet cleanliness/loo roll sometimes iffy. Good value, no-frills escape.

Unpowered grass and earth tent site

Liked Hi, my first experience with my wife in kingfisher campsite was wonderful and exceptional. We owe this great experience to the staff and especially the director Rachael who was very kind and welcoming. She was very understanding and professional. I want to thank her for making it feel like we were part of their family.

Unpowered grass and earth motorhome site

Liked Nice site with lovely view of the local vineyards and hills. Toilets and showers were clean and lovely to have hot water. The washing up sink outside needs to be plumbed in. Very misleading advertising as campers are unable to use the activity centre Nextdoor. It is for groups of 12 minimum (scouts/guides/organised groups etc) and no option for campers to do any of the activities advertised which was really disappointing. However the Paddlesports at Weirwood Reservoir (15 min drive away) has a variety of water sports to choose from. Lovely cafe there and stunning walks around the reservoir.
The campsite is only level at the top of the hill, with room for a few pitches. The rest of the space is completely unpitchable as severely sloping. Unadvertised is the beautiful walk at the bottom left of the field which takes you onto the mid Sussex link route. The woods there are lovely with a little stream flowing through - perfect for kids and dogs to play in. All sorts of wildlife around too.

Unpowered grass and earth motorhome site

Liked Open space, park where you like, facilities clean and worked well. Camp fire options are plentiful, well used and well respected.
Whole site looked like a really good set up and I'd definitely return if I'm in the area again.

Disliked Tricky to get hold of anyone before arrival. Latest check in of 1700 was missed because of traffic delays. I couldn't find a contact number that worked to get in touch with anyone. Fortunately on arrival there was a mobile number on the gate that worked straight away but would have been nice to have that information ahead of time.

Unpowered grass and earth motorhome site

Liked Beautiful setting, hardly anyone else camping( 3 other pitches). Secure gates at entrance.
Plenty of info about the campsite given to us on arrival. Liked hearing the whistle of the Bluebell railway steam train every now and again.

Disliked I found the gates quite tricky to manoeuvre, and heavy both entering and leaving the site.
The washing up sink in chiff chaff field wasn't connected to water or drains so the washing up had to be done in the toilet block which was not ideal.
There was some rubbish by the bins that appeared to have been just left there.there were recycling bins but no general waste bin. We took our rubbish home.

Unpowered grass and earth tent site

Liked The view and setting, the freedom to pitch anywhere. The proximity to local activities, such as paddle boarding.

Decent shower, with consistent hot water and pressure.

Disliked There was no designated washing up area, which meant we had to use the drinking water tap, which was cold. So we had to wash everything again when we got home.

There was only one shower. The toilets were often grubby, the loo roll was in limited supply and often ran out long before being replaced.

The scout leaders camping the neighbouring area were rude and accusatory, when we unintentionally tried to use the toilet designated to their group.

Liked Views were amazing and great nearby activities.

Disliked Toilets were dirty, rarely any loo roll but eventually did get cleaned but not until the morning. No washing up facilities other than in the toilets or next to the elsan tip.

Unpowered grass and earth motorhome site

Liked Freedom!
Sturdy old school toilet & shower block.
Freedom to use bbq frame/fire pit.
The view and the steam train tooting through the trees in the distance leaving it's steam trailing above the trees.
6m min. between pitches and only 7 in the field I think at any time ...only 1 other party there when I was (on a friday night in July!) and they were on the other side so it was perfect!
No wifi... just how I like it!

Disliked Bit of a wordy notice about rules in the toilet but I think that was for group staff as it is also a kids activity centre.

Unpowered grass and earth tent site

Liked Loved the open space and size of pitches. Was so peaceful and calm with so many great walks around the local area. Facilities were perfect, basic but had all that is needed for a camping trip.
Loved every minute and will be back again soon! Dogs had a great time too even in the heat! Staff were also really helpful! Loved the views looking across and spotting the train as it went past.

Local attractions

For long woodland rambles, follow in the footsteps of AA Milne’s much-loved Winnie-the-Pooh stories in Ashdown Forest (10 minutes’ drive); find Pooh Bridge and have a game of Pooh Sticks, or take in far-reaching views to the downs from the forested trails. Step back in time with a ride on the heritage Bluebell steam railway between East Grinstead (10 minutes) and Sheffield Park (20 minutes), with stunning views of the West Sussex countryside along the way. There’s more local heritage to be seen at National Trust-owned Standen House and Garden (five minutes), an impressive Arts and Crafts-style house filled with period furnishings and surrounded by a stunning park and woodland. If the kids need a change from lots of history, take them to Tulleys Farm (15 minutes) for enjoyable escape room challenges, maize mazes and animal encounters – seasonal events take place throughout the year, including tulip-picking in spring and pumpkin-carving at Halloween.
