  • Family campsite in Sussex woodland 20 minutes’ drive from Crawley
  • Ardingly Reservoir 15 minutes’ drive and Go Ape Crawley 20 minutes
  • Outdoor activities, a licensed snack bar and takeaway pizzas on site
Looking for a peaceful Sussex getaway surrounded by pristine countryside? You’ll want to check out Embers Camping – Turners Hill, tucked away in a 1,000-acre ancient woodland on the Standinghall Estate. It’s wonderfully quiet and relaxed, and yet also manages to be a family-friendly 20 minutes’ drive from all the amenities of Crawley town centre. Families have plenty to amuse them on site, from volleyball to ping-pong and plenty of space on the camping fields for kicking a ball around or playing rounders. You can explore the woods on foot or by bike, follow way-marked wildlife trails around the estate, and see how many species of birds the kids can spot. There’s also a choice of hiking trails right from the pitches – and if you’re really quiet, you may glimpse a deer or two among the trees. Wake up to a decent cuppa, barista coffee and pastries in The Embers Hub, and end your fun-filled day with a well-earned draft beer or glass of wine at the bar. Freshly made pizzas are served up every night – pre-order them before arrival – so you can all eat around your campfire as night falls, gaze at stars glittering above and listen for the nocturnal calls of owls and foxes. Facilities are tip-top too: bathrooms are spotlessly clean with piping hot showers (bring your own towels please). Every pitch has its own firepit and you can buy kindling on site.

Local attractions

Active families can make straight for Ardingly Reservoir (15 minutes’ drive) to hire paddleboards or kayaks for splashing around on the water. If you have your own craft, there’s a boat slipway on the shoreline that you can use for a small fee. Back on dry land, circumnavigate the reservoir on the nature trail, go fishing (a permit is needed) or spot birds including kingfishers at the water’s edge. More high-octane challenges for you and the family include tackling the tree-top rope courses and all-terrain electric Segways at Go Ape Crawley (20 minutes), or the paintball games and laser tag at Driver Wood Activity Centre (10 minutes). On a more sedate note, animal lovers should drop by Tilgate Nature Centre (25 minutes) and get up close to friendly donkeys, comical meerkats and furry alpacas. Expert zookeepers give daily talks, and your kids can help feed some of the animals.
