Looking into the tent

  • Bell tent 10 minutes’ drive from Chichester and Bognor Regis
  • Within 10 minutes’ drive of the edge of the South Downs National Park
  • Firepit area at the pitch and a running stream nearby; dog-friendly
There’s no need to worry about which tent pole goes where at Sheepwash, a dog-friendly site with one single bell tent in a fenced-off area in West Sussex. The spacious four-person bell tent has blow-up beds, so once you have added your own comforts – a duvet, pillow, sheets and towels – it’s good to go. A cosy firepit area is next to the tent for laidback evenings (using wood and any other necessary fire ingredients purchased for a small fee from the site). There is no hot or treated water on site, just a portable toilet, running water (not for drinking) and a nice little running stream nearby, so you'll need to bring along your own safe drinking water. There are plenty of shops in Westergate (five minutes’ drive away) and Chichester (10 minutes). If you’re only in need of a few little bits, the bell tent is 15 minutes’ walk away from a vending machine on the edge of Oving that churns out dairy goods for a small price: coffee, milk, eggs, butter and cheese. This is a handy base for exploring Chichester’s historic sites – the city walls, cathedral and museums – or for hiking in the South Downs National Park, where the outskirts are within 10 minutes’ drive of the site too. That's not all: Goodwood Racecourse, Arundel Castle and the Bognor Regis seafront are all 15 minutes’ drive away from the bell tent too.

Local attractions

You might want to check what’s on at Goodwood Racecourse (15 minutes’ drive) once you’ve secured your stay at Sheepwash. Once per year, it hosts the Goodwood Revival and Goodwood Festival of Speed, featuring racing events with vintage and modern cars. Not that keen on racing? There’s plenty to do of a different theme: those who like museums may want to have a browse of the World War I and Cold War aircrafts at the Tangmere Military Aviation Museum (five minutes) and or the restored rural scenes from the 1300s to the early 1900s at the Weald & Downland Living Museum (15 minutes). Of course, Chichester (10 minutes) has lots of historic sites too, from the Novium Museum and Chichester Cathedral to the pretty Bishop’s Palace Gardens and Chichester Canal. Arundel, too: it has the medieval Arundel Castle (15 minutes) and a museum. Up north is the South Downs National Park, home to sites like Stansted Park (30 minutes), an Edwardian country house with a deer park and woodland. The Kingley Vale National Nature Reserve (20 minutes) is another easy-to-reach spot. It has ancient trees and wildlife like red kites, buzzards and woodpeckers, so bring your binoculars.
