  • Off-grid nearly wild camping 25 minutes’ drive from Ashford in Kent
  • The Big Cat Sanctuary 10 minutes’ drive and Leeds Castle 15 minutes
  • Back-to-basics mown pitches on a flower meadow and wildlife haven
Heading for Dover ferries and adventures in Europe? Sticking around to explore Kent? Either way, Far and Away, just outside Headcorn village and 25 minutes’ drive from Ashford, offers a quiet and rural space to spend the night off-grid camping in a wildflower meadow. This pop-up site sits in a field sheltered by mature trees, with easy access to multiple public footpaths through untamed Kent countryside – by the way, the field gets daily visits from red kites and eagles, and on still nights you can hear lions roaring at The Big Cat Sanctuary across the fields. Facilities-wise, this is practically wild camping (there are basic loos but no electricity or showers) so do make sure your packing list includes torches and batteries. Should you wish to make a trip up to London, there are super-easy train links from Headcorn Station to Charing Cross, with the journey taking about an hour and 20 minutes. Sticking closer to home base, you can go sightseeing in pretty Kent villages like Biddenden (10 minutes’ drive), Tenterden and Cranbrook (both 20 minutes), or dent your bank account with a shopping spree at the Designer Outlet Ashford (half an hour).

Unpowered grass and earth tent or trailer tent site

Liked: A great site with a lovely view and open space to pitch tent. The owners are easily contactable and provided good level of detail to locate and access site.
Affordable but with everything you need. Jayne and Mark were kind enough to let us borrow a fire pit when we had forgotten ours. Plus we had the whole place to ourselves due to the time of the year! Dog friendly which was a huge plus for us.

Disliked: That we did not stay for longer!

Unpowered grass and earth tent or trailer tent site

Liked: The family who owned the site was super friendly, greeting us when we arrived and making friendly conversation throughout our stay

There is only one porta potty but it was incredibly clean, always with water, soap and toilet paper

Disliked: It is by a road so you can hear cars at night

We found the surrounding walks a bit limiting without a car

Nothing wrong with the campsite itself but If you are coming by public transport it is NOT ACCESSIBLE BY FOOT FROM HEADCORN STATION TO THE SITE which I wish we knew beforehand but there is taxi services from the station that we paid £8.50 for a trip to the site

Unpowered grass and earth tent or trailer tent site

Liked: Mooie plek in onbekend Kent, meestal rij je hier alleen voorbij op weg van en naar Dover. Zeker een plek om ook eens langer door te blijven. Basic kamperen, toilet goed verzorgd en schoon.

Disliked: Niets
