  • Peaceful glamping site set on two acres of scenic farmland
  • Half a mile from Thorpe-le-Soken station; Clacton 15 minutes' drive
  • Furnished bell tents with double bed, cutlery and crockery provided
How to describe Glamping at Lodge Farm? Think fancy open-air getaways 15 minutes' drive from the Essex coast with rural views whichever way you turn and you'll start to get an idea. This small-scale site is spread out over two acres of peaceful farmland. The bell tents here all feel like a proper rural hideaway – each one looks out over gorgeous green countryside and comes equipped with appropriately outdoorsy kit, including a firepit for outdoor grills in fine weather. Although deep in the countryside, Glamping at Lodge Farm isn't the kind of place where you'll have to leave luxuries and creature comforts behind – well-maintained toilets and hot showers are a short walk away across the field, and the smart canvas units come equipped with a comfortable double bed, linen, pillows, crockery, cutlery and soft furnishings. Glamping at Lodge Farm is in a quiet location approximately two miles from the village of Little Clacton. Handily for those after car-free trips, it's also under half a mile's walk from Thorpe-le-Soken railway station. Slightly further afield, Frinton-on-Sea's lovely sandy beach and Clacton-on-Sea's popular seafront and pier are both within a 15-minute drive. Looking to spend the whole day on the coast? Chat to the site's owners about hiring their beach hut in Holland-on-Sea (15 minutes).

What customers say

Peaceful, secluded rural gem with a legend of a host, Hannah. Enjoy roomy pitches, fire pits & a handy communal kitchen. Comfy bell tents. Clean facilities, though a single portaloo/shower could be tight when busy. Great base for exploring, but watch out for the lane if you've got a small car. Off-grid living is part of the charm for many!

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked How quiet it was, that it was off the beaten track and there was a gas hob to use.
That Hannah came to welcome us.

Disliked The porta toilet, if the field was full 1 porta loo wouldn't be enough. Also would probably smell.
The shower was very small and with a small child we wouldn't have been able to get in with her too shower.
Nowhere to refreeze freezer blocks making it hard to keep food.
The field has long grass, uneven, thistles and stinging nettles.
We left a night early.

From the manager: Oh dear! It sounds like you aren't suited to "off grid" (fyi no electric) camping as clearly described in the site information.
I will first address your hypothetical dislike: Yes, indeed if we had a 15 pitch site one porta loo would not suffice. However, we have a maximum of four pitches. Saying a toilet would "probably" smell is also hypothetical and not a valid complaint. In fact, any toilet has the potential to smell depending on who has used it...The shower is clearly depicted on the site information with several photos which again, had you had properly looked at the site information you would have realised this.
There is no where on site to re-freeze ice blocks because we are OFF GRID!!! (no electric). I do however provide a cool box in the kitchen area (as seen in your photo!) with ice blocks in which I kindly freeze at home and top-up daily.
Thistles and stinging nettles: These are part of the countryside along with spiders and smells. Whilst I check the 3 acre field for any hazardous litter I cannot be responsible for the odd small thistle or stinging nettle you may encounter. It is a field and not a lawn after all...

Great place if you want to go off grid, ideal for small groups, 👌

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked What a lovely setting, not having people on top of you is definitely a great environment, the allowance of the fire pit made the evenings magical, Hannah always had a smile, watching the harvest come in was a really positive experience, the toilet was always clean, the kitchen area allowed us to wash up in warm/hot water. There is passable mobile network connectivity on both voice and Data..... The area has lots to see, both by the coast and heading inland. Supermarkets close by, and loved you could park near the sea for free most of the time...

Disliked You are definitely off grid. That means No power anywhere, no ability to charge phone, and/or small powered cool box. There are no Power Points at all. While I put this as a dislike, it is also a good reason to come here..... While the site is small if all slots were filled with capacity, the single portaloo (probably the nicest portaloo I have ever used), and shower could be a problem.... That being said it was not a problem on our trip as site had spare capacity. I wish Hannah all the best with the venture.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked Good location; far enough from everything to be quiet and feel secluded, but close enough to buy any things that mightve been forgotten.
Stables fitted with kitchen and a portaloo next door.
Plenty of space for privacy even if other people are using the field.
Lovely views.
Didnt see anyone else there except a family using one of the bell tents. So its perfect if you like being left alone.

Disliked Satnav took me to a closed off lane and had to find my own way to the farm, which they did state on their page, i just didnt read it until after id arrived. So entirely my own fault.
The lane to the farm is fine for a tractor or 4x4 but a small hatchback could struggle, if you dont like it too bouncy.

Local attractions

Head to Clacton-on-Sea (15 minutes' drive) to see the traditional Essex seaside – a restored Victorian pier, funfairs, bowling, amusement arcades and an aquarium all provide plenty of family-friendly options. For something on the less commercial side, you could also head out to Essex’s well-preserved rural coastline to explore wildlife havens like Hamford Water (15 minutes) or the Blackwater Estuary (an hour). After a few days spent dallying along the coast, dive into Essex's green interior with a visit to Dedham or Flatford (both 30 minutes) and see where famed 18th-century painter John Constable drew inspiration for many of his finest works. Other highlights inland include well-preserved Colchester (25 minutes), Britain's oldest recorded town where Roman heritage, afternoons in Castle Park and walking safaris around Colchester Zoo combine to make an excellent day out. After that, this part of the world has lots of other towns that are well worth exploring, from the scenic island resort of West Mersea (45 minutes) to the ancient market town of Saffron Walden (an hour and 20 minutes).
