Herd of deer

  • Pop-up meadow camping on an East Sussex working farm with rural views
  • A five-minute drive to Bodiam Castle; 35 minutes to Camber Sands beach
  • Country walks from site; foodie pub and farm shop a 10-minute drive
In need of some down time? Chances are you’ll find it at Eyelid Farm, a peaceful, pop-up campsite on a working farm near Bodiam in East Sussex. With only a handful of spacious pitches available, the camping field is set on a sheltered field with nothing more than the occasional herd of deer to disturb you. OK, so this is true wild camping, where you’re left pretty much to your own devices. Feel free to pick your own pitch and don’t forget that well-behaved dogs are allowed to come on your mini-break too. Facilities may be minimal, but toilet facilities and a standpipe with fresh water are available. You can buy logs and kindling at the site, and also hire a firepit for barbecues. From your pitch, it’s a 50-minute walk through fields and woodland to a farm shop in Salehurst for local produce to cook up on the grill, or if you’re sworn off cooking, there’s a dog-friendly foodie pub (it’s best to book in advance) close by, with a leafy terrace and gorgeous views of surrounding fields. Oh – and finally, a couple of house rules. The owners do ask that you keep noise to a minimum between 10.30pm and 8am, so everyone can enjoy a peaceful night’s sleep.

What customers say

This quiet, roomy campsite gets kudos for its spotless, modern loos and showers, rated hotel-quality. Campers loved the plenty of space in the big field and the friendly, helpful owners. It's a beautiful spot with walks and sights nearby. While a few small suggestions were made, overall it's super positive, with many keen to come back.

Unpowered grass motorhome site

Liked We had a relaxing one night stay at Eyelid Farm over the weekend.
We were met by a welcoming member of staff who gave us information of the local area when we arrived.
There was plenty of field space, and flat areas at the top and bottom of the field for our motorhome. Our children enjoyed riding their bikes around the field.
Camp fires were allowed and there was wood to purchase and fire pits to hire, if needed.
Toilet and shower facilities were very modern and kept clean and there were also good washing up facilities.
We enjoyed out stay and would be happy to return 😀

Disliked There was nothing we disliked with our stay!

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked Massive field where you can camp so far away from others that you can't hear them at all. You can buy firewood and rent fire pits. Facilities were tip top! Really nice showers and toilets. Only one shower which we thought would be an issue but the owner sets the maximum pitch for the site very low for the space so we never had to queue for the shower. Owner was friendly and told us about all the lovely walks and pubs near by which we visited which were all great!

Local attractions

There are some smashing walks (with a smattering of history thrown in) close to base camp. Download a self-guided tour of the grounds of moated, National Trust-owned Bodiam Castle (five minutes’ drive), while Scotney Castle (30 minutes, also National Trust) offers looped walks through woodland as well as romantic, lakeside ruins. To nose around glorious gardens, head for Great Dixter House and Gardens (15 minutes) or Sissinghurst Castle Gardens (25 minutes). After all that high-brow stuff, it’s time for the kids to have some fun. Treat them to a ride on a steam train along the Kent and East Sussex Railway (25 minutes), or let them loose on the ziplines and rope courses at Go Ape Bedgebury (20 minutes). If splashing around in the waves is more your style, pack up the car and head for the coast for old-fashioned family fun on the beach. Camber Sands (35 minutes) has got plenty of dunes for the kids to run around on, and lots of chances to make towering sandcastles – it’s also a top-notch spot for windsurfing.
