  • Basic pop-up site 10 minutes’ drive from Grange-over-Sands in Cumbria
  • Cartmel and the racecourse 10 minutes’ drive; Windermere 20 minutes
  • Medieval tower, vintage tractors and a café serving good food all day
Proving that it is quite possible to get away from the crowds when staying in the Lake District, Wraysholme Creamery is a peaceful and no-frills pop-up site 10 minutes’ from Grange-over-Sands in Cumbria. It may not be in the centre of the national park, but it’s still only 20 minutes’ drive to Windermere and 40 minutes to Coniston Water, so you can easily spend time exploring the Lakes – and there are plenty of walking and cycling options right from your pitch. Otherwise, there’s a fair amount to see and do at this site on a working dairy farm – and one with its own medieval tower at that. Petrolheads may want to have a nose around the vintage tractors, carriages and engines in the barn, and there’s a bike night every second Thursday over summer. You’ll doubtless encounter the livestock too, with cows and calves grazing in neighbouring fields, so you can experience farm life firsthand. Talking of fields, the camping meadow is nicely level, and although facilities stretch no further than portable loos, there is an on-site café with all-day offerings from that all-important morning coffee to delicious filled wraps and home-baked cheesecake, as well as ice cream and other dairy products that have been made on site.

What customers say

Great spot, easy to find and super peaceful. Folks loved the friendly owners, who even opened early for brekkie. The cafe's got cheap eats and ripper homemade ice cream. Flat sites, good value, and people would def go back.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked A brilliant site with absolutely lovely owners, who were always willing to chat about the farm. Had a long weekend here with my wife and it was great. Onsite cafe for coffees and ice creams/milkshakes made directly from the dairy farm. Breakfasts in the mornings and other options for eating on an evening. Would definitely stay here again.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked This campsite is very family-friendly and has plenty of animals on-site, which my son absolutely loved. The ice cream was incredible, and the food was just as good. The hosts were extremely friendly—honestly, they were what made the weekend so special. They were always helpful and welcoming. Overall, it’s a lovely family-run business that we truly enjoyed.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked Great Campsite, flat, spacious, friendly, owners came checking to make sure everyone was ok, they checked the toilets throughout the day, re filling loo roll. Lots around to do walks, they had a cafe on site with donkeys and cows, milkshake was amazing! Great price! Offered Pizzas at night (could just be weekends). Owners dealt with a sticky situation with other campers that had drank too much at night by coming down and shutting them down straight away. Beautiful views, loved watching the parachutes sky dive in the next field. Great walking routes, village isn’t too far, with a fabulous pub, everyone is super friendly including locals. Great for families! Our daughter made a friend on the campsite and we also made a friend too.

Disliked It’s not that I didn’t dislike it but toilets are portaloos (all though always clean and checked very regularly) they are spread out in different areas of the field and we just happen to pitch close to one that lots of people used.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked Pitch was flat, field was huge and facilities were fine. If there were any more campers a second portaloo might have been good - especially as some campers seem not to know how to use them nicely! Lovely to walk out to the end of Humphrey head for the sunset. Didn’t manage to meet the owners as we arrived after shop closed and left early. No issues with late check in. All good, would come again.

Local attractions

Any adventure-sports addicts among you can get your thrills sky-diving over lakeland countryside at Skydive Northwest (five minutes’ drive), while anyone who prefers to stay on solid ground amble around the pretty village of Cartmel (10 minutes), which straddles the cutely named Clogger Beck. As well as the medieval priory, there is a brewery to tour and traditional pubs to discover – and for all you horseracing fans, there’s a full summer schedule at the racecourse (also 10 minutes). Next stop could be Holker Hall and Gardens (five minutes, open Wednesday to Sunday), a truly splendid estate with a vast Gothic Revival-era mansion and manicured gardens to explore. There are more gardens – these filled with tropical palms and overlooking Morecambe Bay – at coastal Yewbarrow House and Gardens (10 minutes). Often overlooked in the headlong rush not to the Lakes, Grange-over-Sands (five minutes) also has Morecambe Bay as well as lots to recommend it for a day trip. It has a certain Victorian elegance, with ornamental gardens and a long seaside promenade, as well as bags of fun – crazy golf, playgrounds and a skate park – for the kids.
