  • Family-run hill farm campsite five minutes’ drive from Boot in Eskdale
  • West Lakes Adventure five minutes’ drive; Muncaster Castle 15 minutes
  • Lake District walks straight from the off-grid, dog-friendly pitches
When you’re after spectacular mountain views on an almost wild Lake District camping break, Hollin Head Campsite is a top contender. Set on a family-run hill farm running a flock of Herdwick sheep, the spacious pitches sit in a tree-sheltered camping meadow by the side of the burbling River Esk. There are scenic walks along the Esk from the pitches, and numerous fell and mountain hikes right from the campsite gate. If you like the sound of a pint at the end of your day, there’s a pub within five minutes’ stroll, and when foodie supplies are running low, you can stock up on pretty much everything at the local shop in Eskdale (five minutes’ drive). Well-behaved dogs are more than welcome to accompany you on your Lake District adventure, but please keep them on leads at all times while on site, due to the proximity of the sheep. Small firepits and barbecues are allowed by your pitch, just be sure to raise them off the ground to prevent the grass getting burnt. And as this peaceful, no-frills site is firmly off-grid, please note that there are no showers or electric hook-ups; simple facilities include clean portable loos, a drinking-water tap and recycling bins.

What customers say

Great spot by the river, super peaceful with awesome views & trail access. Portaloos are spotless, owner Liz is a legend! Basic but good value. A bit of a trek to facilities for some spots, and a bit of farm noise now and then, but heaps of natural beauty and a friendly vibe. Highly recommend!

Liked Quiet campsite with idyllic scenery located next to the crystal clear River Esk.
The host was warm and welcoming from arrival and had allocated large pitches even when the campsite was 'fully booked'.
Thanks for having us!

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked Perfect little campsite, if you like to get away from it all!
Very basic facilities (portaloos and cold water) but what else do you need when you're right by the river?
Liz is just wonderful and always on hand to help, and sells the best eggs and cucumbers!
I will definitely be back :-)

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked Site was small and very lovely camping by the river with beautiful mountain views.
Owner was lovely, kept checking in to make sure all was ok, helpful with places to go.
Toilets were kept exceptionally clean, (the cleanest portaloos i have seen.

Disliked Road was a little noisy in the day but went quiet at night, obviously not the owners fault or would deter from visiting again.
